Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my deep concren regarding the extreme noise of video games late night in our apartment.
I am your tenant, and have been living here for last one year in aprtment 808. I and my family have been facing the isssue of loud voice of video games from couple of weeks ago. Intially, we were not aware that this noise came to our neighbour appartment number 809 who came new here from last month.
This loud noise has adverse effects on your family. It does not not disturb our sleep at night but also effects the productivity at work because of having insifficient sleep at night. Moreove, my siblings also find it difficult to go for school because of inadequate sleep at night which has adverse effect on their academic performance.
It would be really appreciated if you could talk to this apartment on behalf of us to play the video games at low volume at night ehile taking care of other tenants, and issue them a warning to use the low volume for playstation.
Thank you for your assistance in advance, and I look forward to solving this issue at your earliest convenience.
Yours Faithfully,
Gaganpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that the noise began “a couple of weeks ago,” describe its effects on sleep, work, and your siblings’ schooling, and ask the agency to speak to the neighbour and issue a warning. These details make the complaint relevant and give the agency a practical response to consider. The impact is supported with several examples, although the request could be more precise—for instance, ask that the neighbour stop gaming during specified quiet hours, and indicate what follow-up you expect from the agency. The opening and closing are suitable for a formal complaint. Overall, the task is handled clearly, with some scope to develop the requested action more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: it introduces the complaint, gives background, explains the consequences, and ends with a request and courteous closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and links such as “but also” and “Moreover” show an attempt to connect related effects. The progression is generally easy to follow, though some connections are awkward or unclear. For example, “Intially, we were not aware that this noise came to our neighbour” does not clearly explain how the neighbour relates to the noise, and “This loud noise has adverse effects on your family” shifts the reference from the writer’s family to the agency’s. Use consistent references such as “my family” and make each paragraph’s opening link explicitly to the complaint.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of complaint-related vocabulary, including “express my deep concern,” “adverse effects,” “productivity,” and “academic performance.” These choices help communicate the seriousness of the problem. However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural combinations are noticeable, including “concren,” “aprtment,” “insifficient,” and “play the video games at low volume.” Some repetition of “at night” and “low volume” also limits flexibility. Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, such as “the noise from the neighbour’s video games” and “keep the volume down.” The meaning remains understandable, but more precise and consistently natural word choice would make the formal complaint clearer and more polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “It does not not disturb our sleep at night but also…” and the conditional request beginning “It would be really appreciated if…”. However, errors recur in sentence construction and grammatical control. For example, “I and my family have been facing” has an awkward subject construction, “for last one year” is missing an article, and “It does not not disturb” contains a duplicated negative that disrupts the sentence. The long request sentence also becomes difficult to follow because its clauses are not clearly controlled. Work on articles, subject phrasing, verb patterns, and punctuation, and proofread for duplicated words. More accurate complex sentences would improve clarity.
