Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am Miss. Mercy, one of your client that rented a flat with apartment number R103 in Winsberg house located at Johnson street through your agency 3 months ago. I am writing to bring to your notice of an unpleasant occurrence in the premises.

It all started 3 weeks ago, when I would be forced awake to a resounding noise of what appears to be like a video game in the odd hour of the morning. I have concurrently observed this to be happening from around 12:00am -2:00am during weekdays which I was forced to trace the noise to the next door neighbor Mr. Wilson, who moved into the apartment a month ago through your agency.

I am a shallow sleeper and I am particularly disturbed with this situation as I always find it difficult to resume sleeping once awaken. This has greatly altered my sleep pattern and routine and adversely affecting my concentration level and productivity at work.

I would appreciate it if the agency could take strict measures in establishing, ensuring and enforcing laid down rules of no loud noises as from hours of 10:00pm through 6:00am when majority of the tenants are home so as not to inconvenient others.

Thank you for your constant help and I look forward to a positive feedback from your agency.

Yours sincerely,

Mercy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter covers all three required points clearly and appropriately. You establish when the issue began (“3 weeks ago”), identify the late-night period and explain its effects on your sleep, work concentration and productivity. You also make a clear request for the agency to enforce quiet-hour rules, so the purpose remains consistent throughout. The details about the neighbour moving in and the hours of disturbance help make the complaint specific and credible. To make the response even more complete, state more directly what action you expect the agency to take regarding this particular neighbour—for example, contacting him or investigating the complaint—rather than focusing mainly on general rules for all tenants. Overall, the ideas are well developed, with only a small gap in the requested action’s specificity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: you introduce yourself and the complaint, explain its timing and source, describe its impact, and then request action. Paragraphing supports this progression, and links such as “It all started” and “This has greatly altered” help connect events and consequences. The letter format is also clear, with an appropriate opening and closing. Some phrasing makes the flow less smooth, particularly the long sentence beginning “It all started 3 weeks ago,” which combines the onset, timing, and identification of the neighbour. The final request also contains several actions in one sentence. Separating these ideas and using clearer references would make cohesion more effortless and less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a good range of vocabulary to describe the complaint and its consequences, including “resounding noise,” “disturbed,” “sleep pattern,” “concentration level,” and “productivity.” These choices communicate the seriousness of the problem, and the tone is generally suitable for a formal letter. There are occasional awkward or imprecise collocations, however: “bring to your notice of” is not natural, “shallow sleeper” is less idiomatic than “light sleeper,” and “positive feedback” is vague in this context. “Establishing, ensuring and enforcing” also feels unnecessarily repetitive. Aim for precise, conventional formal expressions, such as asking the agency to investigate the complaint and contact the neighbour. This would make your vocabulary more natural and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including complex clauses such as “I am particularly disturbed with this situation as…” and “I would appreciate it if the agency could…”. The meaning is generally clear, and the letter includes several well-formed sentences. Some grammatical errors remain, though, particularly in agreement, articles, and clause construction. For example, “one of your client” should be “one of your clients,” while “once awaken” needs a suitable form such as “once I am awake.” In “This has greatly altered my sleep pattern and routine and adversely affecting…,” the verb forms do not match; use “and has adversely affected.” The opening sentence is also difficult to control because it contains several details in one structure. Shorter sentences and careful checking of verb forms would improve accuracy.
