Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

l am writing to complain about a problem with the accommodation l recently rented a flat through your agency.

When l move into the flat, my neighbour used to listen a music and play video games with his sister in the evening. However, for the past two weeks, he has been playing video games very loudly and making a lot of noise late at night.

My family and l cannot sleep properly at night. My children cannot study because of the noise, which disturbs everyone in the flat. when l wake up in the morning, l feel very tired because l have not sleep well. My neighbour flat is very close to our own. so it is diffucult to avoid the noise.

l would like you to speak to my neighbour and ask him to reduce the volume of his video games especially at night. l would grateful if you could take appropriate action to resolve this problem as soon as possible.

Thanks you for your attention to this matter.

Your faithfully,

Chanel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three required points: the noise became worse “for the past two weeks,” it affects your family’s sleep and your children’s study, and you ask the agency to speak to the neighbour and reduce the volume. These details make the complaint clear and relevant. The impact is explained with useful specifics, such as feeling tired in the morning, while the requested action is polite and appropriate. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the timeline: the opening says you “recently rented” the flat, then describes an earlier pattern and a change over two weeks. You could also specify that the late-night noise should stop or be limited to particular hours.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a coherent overall structure: it introduces the complaint, explains the change in the neighbour’s behaviour, describes the effects, and ends with a request. The sequence is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “However” and “because” help show contrast and cause. Some connections are less smooth, however. The shift from “When I move into the flat” to “for the past two weeks” leaves the timeline slightly unclear, and “My neighbour flat is very close to our own. so…” is awkwardly divided and linked. Use paragraph breaks to separate the background, effects, and requested action, and connect related sentences with accurate punctuation and reference. This would make the progression more polished and less dependent on basic links.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its effects, including “disturbs,” “reduce the volume,” and “appropriate action.” These choices suit a formal letter, and the meaning is generally clear. However, some word combinations and forms are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “listen a music,” “my neighbour flat,” and “resolve this problem.” Spelling and capitalization also need attention, including “diffucult” and repeated lowercase “l” for “I.” Aim for more precise, natural collocations: for example, say that the neighbour “plays music” or “keeps the volume down,” and refer to “my neighbour’s flat.” A wider range of formal complaint language would add flexibility while retaining a polite tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple sentences and some more developed structures, including “My children cannot study because of the noise” and “I would be grateful if you could…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “When I move into the flat” needs a past-tense form, and “I have not sleep well” needs the past participle “slept.” The sentence beginning “My neighbour flat…” also needs a possessive form, while “I would grateful” is missing “be.” Capitalization and sentence boundaries are inconsistent, as in “when I wake up” and the full stop before “so.” Check verb forms, articles, possessives, and punctuation carefully; more consistently accurate sentences would strengthen the letter.
