Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

i'm writing you a letter to inform you about the present situation of our flat. I hope you will understand and solve our problem as soon as possible.

We are going through the extreme loud sounds of video games at late night. This problem happens between 11pm to 2 am at night from late two weeks. We had a complaint to them aswell for this Inappropriate behavior but they do not listen to us.

The noise were so loud because of this we could not sleep at night properly. There are elderly people in our house who cannot sleep because of the excessive noise, and this has a very negative impact on their health.

I would like you to take action against them as soon as possible and inform them how much their behaviour is disturbing us, so that we do not have to face any further inconvenience in the future.

I would be very thankfull to you.

Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three required points: it identifies the late-night gaming, explains the effect on sleep and elderly household members, and asks the agency to intervene. The timing is reasonably specific—“between 11pm to 2 am”—but the start of the problem is less clear in “from late two weeks”; state plainly that it began about two weeks ago. The impact is relevant, especially the concern about elderly residents’ health, though this could be developed with a concrete consequence such as tiredness the following day. The requested action is clear but broad: specify whether you want the agency to contact the neighbour, issue a warning, or enforce quiet hours. These details would make the response more complete and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: it introduces the complaint, gives the noise schedule and previous attempt to resolve it, describes the impact, and ends with a request. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and phrases such as “because of this” and “so that” show links between ideas. However, some connections are awkward or repetitive, particularly “The noise were so loud because of this we could not sleep,” where the relationship between the clauses is not clearly punctuated. The opening also repeats the general idea of a problem before explaining it. Use clearer transitions and sentence boundaries, and make references such as “them” unmistakably refer to the neighbour, to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint, including “excessive noise,” “negative impact,” and “inappropriate behavior.” These choices show an attempt to use more formal language, although some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural for this context. “Extreme loud sounds” is an awkward collocation; “very loud gaming noise” would be more natural. “Present situation of our flat” is vague, and “face any further inconvenience” is less precise than describing continued disturbance. There are also spelling and form issues, including “thankfull” and “aswell.” Aim for concise, natural phrases used in formal complaint letters, and check spelling and spacing carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “There are elderly people in our house who cannot sleep because of the excessive noise.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “The noise were” has subject–verb disagreement, and “This problem happens between 11pm to 2 am at night from late two weeks” has problems with tense, prepositions, and time expression. The sentence beginning “The noise were so loud because of this” also needs clearer punctuation or a conjunction to join its clauses. Practise accurate past and present forms and use sentence boundaries to control longer ideas; this will make the letter more polished without sacrificing its clear message.
