Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the tenant living beside me, who has rented the unit from you. This is about 303 Nation Park Ave, L5T 6O9.

Apparently, until last month, everything was going well. But, recently the relatives visiting their house started making problems for me in having enough sleep at night. Since last month, I have been facing continuous issues with people playing loud video games late at night, causing me tremendous trouble in sleeping.

Unfortunately, my work schedule has changed recently. I have to leave the house by 6:00 am to report on site at 6:30 am. For that reason, I have to sleep at 10:00 pm and at the same time, the neighbour starts playing loud games. As a result, I am deprived of good sleep, leading to an inability to focus on work completely.

To mitigate the issues, I would suggest that you advise the neighbour to maintain silence during the night time, especially after 10:00 pm. In addition, fostering a rule with a fine for making loud noise can help others to avoid inconvenience. I believe this would be the most effective way to resolve this issue and maintain customer satisfaction with your agency.

I hope you understand the severity of the issues. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Milan Bodar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that the disturbance began “since last month,” describe its effect on your sleep and concentration at work, and request that the agency intervene. The specific 10:00 pm bedtime and 6:00 am departure help support the impact, while asking the agency to advise the neighbour gives a practical next step. The suggestion of a noise rule and fine further develops your request. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the inconsistency between saying the neighbour plays games and saying visiting relatives “started making problems”; it is not clear who is responsible. You could also state more directly that you are asking the agency to investigate or contact the tenant.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: the opening identifies the complaint, the middle paragraphs explain its timing and effects, and the final paragraph sets out possible action. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking phrases such as “As a result,” “For that reason,” and “In addition” help connect the ideas. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. Some connections could be more precise, however. “Apparently, until last month, everything was going well” is followed by a reference to visiting relatives, then to the neighbour playing games, which makes the source of the noise less clear. A more direct transition from when the gaming began to its consequences would make the progression smoother and avoid this brief confusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to explain the complaint and its consequences, including “continuous issues,” “deprived of good sleep,” “inability to focus,” and “mitigate.” These choices show some awareness of formal register and allow you to express the problem clearly. There are also a few awkward or imprecise collocations that keep the wording from sounding consistently natural: “making problems for me in having enough sleep,” “sleeping late at night,” and “fostering a rule with a fine” could be expressed more idiomatically. “Customer satisfaction” is understandable but sounds somewhat generic in this personal complaint. Aim for precise phrases such as “disturbing my sleep,” “introduce a noise policy,” and “resolve the disturbance.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response includes a useful mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and many sentences are controlled, such as “As a result, I am deprived of good sleep, leading to an inability to focus on work completely.” You also use subordinate clauses and infinitive structures to explain circumstances and consequences. A few grammatical choices are less accurate or clear. In “the relatives visiting their house started making problems for me in having enough sleep,” the clause structure is awkward and obscures the relationship between the visitors and the noise. “I have to sleep at 10:00 pm and at the same time, the neighbour starts…” would be clearer with a more suitable connector and punctuation. Review sentence construction and punctuation around linked clauses to make these complex ideas easier to follow.
