Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to formally report you about my next door neighbour who lives in flat 4B and is renting out an apartment from your agency at the Regency Tower.
The problem began just after moving in to the new flat. The loud noise of playing video games late at night is distrubing my sleep cycle. As I am a part timer as well as a full time student. It really bothers me a lot. Most of the nights I have to stay up late to complete my assignments and the noise distrubs me a lot. And most of the time I have to get up early to go to school which is a hindrence.
I would really like for you to let them know the rules of the apartment and how it is affecting other people in the building. If still the issue persist , I would like you to give them official warning to ensure peacefull living environment.
Your's Sincerly,
James.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three required points: you identify when the noise began (“just after moving in”), explain its effect on your sleep and studies, and request that the agency explain the rules and issue a warning if needed. The complaint is relevant and your requested action is clear. Some details are less fully developed, however: “just after moving in” does not specify how long ago this was or whether the noise happens every night, and the impact on your sleep and assignments could be explained more precisely. To strengthen the letter, give a clearer timeframe and describe the practical consequences, such as difficulty concentrating or feeling tired the next day. The formal purpose and overall position are already clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a sensible overall sequence: you introduce the complaint, describe its effects, and then state what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “If still the issue persist” signal a condition for further action. Some connections are less smooth or repetitive, particularly the repeated references to being disturbed and the sentence beginning “As I am a part timer…” which is separated from the thought it explains. The opening also includes several identifying details before moving to the problem. For clearer progression, combine related effects in one well-linked sentence and use a more direct transition from the problem to your request.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to a formal complaint, including “formally report,” “official warning,” and “peacefull living environment,” so the reader can understand the issue and the action you seek. There is some range, but several choices are inaccurate or repetitive: “report you about” is not a natural collocation, and “bothers me a lot” and “disturbs me a lot” repeat a general expression rather than specifying the impact. Spelling errors such as “distrubing,” “distrubs,” and “hindrence” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise complaint language and check spelling carefully; for example, describe the noise as “disrupting my sleep” and its effect as “hindering my studies.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the conditional request “If still the issue persist, I would like you to give them…” and the explanation of your work and study commitments. However, some sentence structures and verb forms are not controlled consistently. “As I am a part timer as well as a full time student” is a fragment, while “If still the issue persist” needs a clearer clause structure and subject–verb agreement. The sentence beginning “Most of the nights” also joins ideas awkwardly with “And.” Use complete sentences and check agreement and punctuation. For instance: “If the problem persists, I would appreciate it if you issued the tenant with a formal warning.”
