Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am Denmark Valencia the one who rent a flat in room 204. I am writing a letter to inform you an issue about the very loud noise of my neighbor who rents the room 205.
It is been a week now that my neighbor in room 205 is been playing his video game with a high volume. At first I give him a consideration since I can still tolerate the sounds but until yesterday the very loud video games still on until 4 in the morning which is very teryfying and very uncosiderate to their neighbors here. I don't get enough sleep yesterday because of the noise and right now I can't perform well in my job.
I hope you can resolve this issue by telling all of the tenants that you will give a curfew of what time you can be loud at night. I suggest at around 10pm everyone must be silent. Tell them that you can still play video games but on your headphones after 10pm.
Thank you so much for taking time reading my concern. I hope you can resolve this issue as soon as possible.
Best regards,
Denmark Valencia

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points: you identify when the noise began (“It is been a week now”), explain its effect on your sleep and work, and request action from the agency. The proposed quiet time after 10 p.m. and use of headphones make your request clear and practical. Your position remains consistent, and the details about the noise continuing until 4 a.m. help support the complaint. To make the response more fully developed, explain whether you have already spoken to the neighbour and ask the agency to contact them directly or confirm what steps it will take. Also, the opening “Dear Sir” does not follow the requested “Dear Sir or Madam,” though the letter’s purpose and tone are otherwise clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, describe its duration and impact, then state the action you want and close politely. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and phrases such as “At first” and “I hope” connect the ideas. The sequence from the noise beginning to its effect on your work is especially easy to understand. Some linking is less controlled within sentences, however, as in “At first I give him a consideration since I can still tolerate the sounds but until yesterday…” The shift from the initial tolerance to the current problem would be clearer if divided into shorter sentences and linked more precisely. Overall, the organisation is logical, with some room to make transitions smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-specific vocabulary to communicate the complaint, including “high volume,” “video games,” “curfew,” and “headphones.” The reader can understand the problem and your proposed solution. However, several word choices, collocations, and spelling errors reduce precision and naturalness: “give him a consideration” is not idiomatic, “very terrifying” does not accurately describe the noise’s effect, and “curfew of what time you can be loud” is unclear. There are also spelling errors in “teryfying” and “uncosiderate.” Aim for precise, conventional complaint-letter language, such as describing the noise as “disruptive” and asking the agency to “enforce quiet hours.” This would make your vocabulary more accurate and appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple sentences and attempts at longer structures, for example, “I don't get enough sleep yesterday because of the noise and right now I can't perform well in my job.” The main message remains understandable, but errors in verb forms and sentence construction occur often enough to affect accuracy. Examples include “I am Denmark Valencia the one who rent” and “It is been a week now … is been playing”; these need more accurate forms such as “I am Denmark Valencia, and I rent…” and “My neighbour has been playing… for a week.” The long sentence beginning “At first” also joins several ideas awkwardly. Practise present perfect continuous forms and break complex ideas into well-formed sentences, while checking articles and punctuation.
