Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is Mike, an occupant in appartment 9, block road, and I am writing to complain about my neighbor in same building who plays loud video games and music at night,
This essessive noise started about a week ago when he came home and organised a party amongst his friends. They were celebrating his birthday and as such he invited some people to his flat for the event. I thought it was just a one night thing, hovwer, this has persisted, despite repeated complaints to turn down the volume of his gadgets.
His constant loud musics and games is affecting my reading. i am currently preparing for my final yuear exams and i do most of my reading at night.
i would be very grateful if you could talk to him so that he does not disturb other occupants in the building.
Thank you for your prompt response to my complaints.
Mike Daniel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three required points: you identify the noise as beginning about a week ago, explain that it disrupts your night-time reading while you prepare for exams, and ask the agency to speak to the neighbour. The purpose is clear and the details about the birthday gathering help explain how the problem started. However, the account of the ongoing problem is less fully developed: “despite repeated complaints” does not clarify whether you complained to the neighbour or the agency, or what response you received. The requested action is also quite general; you could ask the agency to remind the tenant of quiet hours and follow up if the noise continues. This covers the task well overall, with some details needing clearer development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear sequence: you introduce the complaint, explain its beginning, describe its effect, and make a request. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “however” and “as such” help connect events. The reader can follow the main message throughout. Some connections are less smooth, particularly the shift from the birthday party to the continuing noise and the reference to “repeated complaints,” whose recipient is unclear. The opening sentence also combines several details in a long, loosely punctuated structure. Separating the introduction into shorter sentences and making the timeline and complaint history explicit would make the organisation more polished while preserving the effective overall progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to a formal complaint, including “occupant,” “persisted,” “affecting,” and “prompt response,” and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, such as “appartment,” “essessive,” “hovwer,” and “yuear.” Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise: “organised a party amongst his friends” and “loud musics” do not sound idiomatic, while “gadgets” is vague for the gaming equipment. The range is adequate for communicating the situation, but accuracy and natural collocation are inconsistent. Proofread spelling carefully and choose standard phrases such as “held a party,” “loud music,” and “gaming equipment” to make the complaint clearer and more professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the sentence beginning “I thought it was just a one night thing, however…” and the explanation of how the noise affects your studies. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. For example, “His constant loud musics and games is affecting” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “my neighbor in same building” is missing an article. The opening sentence is also a run-on, with several ideas joined by commas, and the final request would be clearer with a more controlled clause structure. Use full stops to separate ideas, check singular and plural agreement, and review articles such as “the same building.”
