Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
i am writing this letter in regards to complaint about my neigbour who just rented the flat last week in the same building where is am residing.
I have been observing this obstacle since they moved here. They moved in the apartment on 1st september and its been one month i am having hard time focusing on my studies and other tasks .
They played songs on high volume which distracts me from my sleep especially during night time, which affect my health.Morover, they do parties in which they invite their freinds, in addition to it they do parties , singing and playing on very high pitch which creates a noise pollution .
i would like to request you to give them a notice or warning. Furthermore, i would love to change my apartment in your another building if any available.
i will look forward for your reply .
your faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you say the neighbour moved in on 1 September, explain that the noise disrupts your sleep and studies, and ask the agency to issue a warning or help you move. These details make the complaint relevant and give the agency a clear sense of the problem. The request to move, however, is introduced without explaining whether you would prefer the agency to resolve the noise first or arrange a transfer if that fails. The description also shifts from loud video games in the prompt to songs and parties, so it would be clearer to connect these activities directly to the late-night gaming noise. To strengthen the letter further, explain the frequency or duration of the disturbance and state your preferred outcome more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a recognisable progression from introducing the complaint, to describing its effects, and then making requests. Paragraph breaks help separate these stages, and phrases such as “Furthermore” show an attempt to connect related requests. However, some links are mechanical or unclear: “in addition to it” does not smoothly introduce the party details, and the repeated reference to parties makes the middle paragraph feel less controlled. The opening also combines several ideas in one sentence, while the final request would benefit from a clearer order of priority. Use one paragraph for the timeline, one for the effects, and one for the action you want, with simpler links such as “As a result” and “If this cannot be resolved.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “focusing on my studies,” “distracts me from my sleep,” and “notice or warning.” There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “I am writing this letter” and “noise pollution.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this context: “obstacle” does not mean an ongoing noise problem, “high pitch” is not the same as high volume, and “change my apartment in your another building” is awkward. Spelling errors such as “neigbour,” “freinds,” and “Morover,” along with inconsistent capitalization, also reduce accuracy. Choose direct, precise phrases such as “noise disturbance,” “at a high volume,” and “transfer me to another flat.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more developed sentences, for example, “They moved in the apartment on 1st september and its been one month…” and the sentence explaining how the noise affects your sleep. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “where is am residing,” “which affect my health,” and “They moved in the apartment,” where the sentence structure, agreement, or article/preposition pattern needs correction. Several sentences also run together without appropriate spacing or punctuation, as in “health.Morover” and “parties , singing.” Practise accurate sentence patterns such as “They moved into the flat on 1 September” and “This affects my health.” More consistent control of these forms and punctuation would make the letter easier to read.
