Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to convey the probelm that I am facing while living in my apartment. The neighbour next to my door plays really loud music in the night and it cause disturbance.

This began three days ago, when I came from work tired. I took shower and prepped my bed to rest. A loud noise came form the wall behind my bed.

The noise was really loud that I has to sleep in my living room and it was still heard. I had to wait for three hours till it was turned off. Due to this issue, I was not able to wake up early next day, and had to call sick.

This has been going on from three days and it is really problematic to sleep while the noise comes to my appartment. I am looking for your assistance to inform the neighbours about this issue so that there can be some improvements.

Looking forward to your response.

Kind regards

Jasmine

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you identify when the noise began (“three days ago”), explain its impact by describing sleeping in the living room and missing work the next day, and ask the agency to inform the neighbour. These details make the complaint relevant and give it a clear purpose. The account of the effects is particularly specific. However, the request for action is less fully developed: “so that there can be some improvements” does not say what should happen if the noise continues or specify a reasonable expectation, such as asking the neighbour to keep the volume down late at night. The letter therefore covers the task well overall, while some parts—especially the proposed solution—could be clearer and more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: it introduces the complaint, recounts when the noise started, describes its consequences, and ends with a request and sign-off. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and time markers such as “three days ago” and “next day” guide the reader. Some connections are less smooth or precise. For example, “This has been going on from three days” repeats information already given, while the shift from the single incident to the ongoing problem could be made clearer. The sequence “A loud noise came…” followed by “The noise was really loud…” is understandable but somewhat repetitive. Use clearer links to show how the first night led to the continuing complaint, and avoid restating the same duration.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its effects, including “disturbance,” “assistance,” and “problematic.” The wording is generally understandable, but the range is somewhat limited and several choices are imprecise or unnatural for a formal agency letter. “Plays really loud music” does not match the task’s video-game noise, and “prepped my bed” is an informal, awkward phrase. There are also spelling errors in “probelm,” “form,” and “appartment,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, task-specific expressions such as “plays video games at a high volume” and “prepare for bed,” while maintaining a polite formal tone. More accurate collocations would make the complaint sound clearer and more professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of short statements and longer clauses, and the sequence of events is mostly easy to follow. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with verb forms and agreement: “it cause disturbance” should be “it causes a disturbance,” and “I has to sleep” should be “I had to sleep.” The sentence “The noise was really loud that…” also needs a different structure, such as “The noise was so loud that…”. In “I was not able to wake up early next day,” an article is needed before “next day.” These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the complaint, but checking agreement, past-tense forms, and sentence patterns would improve control. Try combining accurate simple sentences with a few carefully checked complex ones.
