Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writting this letter to inform you that I am facing some noise issue from my neighbouring apartment. Initially the things were going well. But from the previous couple of weeks they had started playing very loud video games.
I am a teacher by profession and after doing this stressful job I have to rest for sometime to recharge my mind and body. But this nosie is badly affecting my nerves. I am unable to pay proper attention to my work. Moreover, I have elderly persons at home, this noise had disturb their routine also.
I request you to shift the residents of this apartment on some other floor where less people are living near them. So, their activities may not have bad impact on the other people lives.
I hope you will pay attention to my issue and try to resolve it as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely,
X.Y.Z.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you say the noise began “from the previous couple of weeks,” explain that it affects your rest, work, and elderly family members, and ask the agency to take action. The purpose is clear and the tone is generally appropriate for a formal complaint. The impact is explained with relevant personal details, but the request to move the neighbours to another floor is quite specific without explaining why this is the best solution or offering an alternative, such as contacting them and enforcing quiet hours. The opening also says “Dear sir,” rather than using the supplied salutation. Developing the requested action more fully and maintaining the formal letter conventions consistently would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall progression: the problem is introduced, its effects are described, and a request is made before the closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “So” show how ideas relate. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. “Initially the things were going well. But…” creates a slightly abrupt contrast, while “So, their activities may not have bad impact…” does not clearly explain how moving the neighbours would achieve this. The reference to “this noise” is understandable, but the final paragraph could connect the requested action more directly to the agency’s role. Use smoother transitions and make the relationship between the proposed solution and its intended result explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its effects, including “stressful job,” “pay proper attention,” and “elderly persons.” These choices make the situation understandable, and the message remains clear despite some inaccurate or unnatural expressions. For example, “noise issue” and “bad impact on the other people lives” are not natural collocations, while “nosie” is a spelling error and “writting” is misspelled. “Affecting my nerves” is also an imprecise way to describe the impact. Aim for more precise complaint-related language and check spelling and collocations. A broader range of natural phrases would make the letter sound more fluent and appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the explanation beginning “after doing this stressful job” and the contrast introduced by “But.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, and errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the complaint. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. In “this noise had disturb their routine,” the verb form is incorrect; “this noise has disturbed their routine” would fit the intended meaning. “I have elderly persons at home” also needs a clearer construction, such as “There are elderly people at home.” In addition, “on some other floor” and “other people lives” show problems with articles and plural/possessive forms. Review verb forms, articles, and noun forms while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
