Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am currently living in the flat that I rented from your agency four months ago. My new neighbour who rented the flat from you a month ago plays very loud loud video games late at night that disturbs me so much.

My neighbour has been doing this for the last two weeks on daily basis which lead me to inform you about the problem. I am a research student and I study late at night everyday which requires a peaceful environment.

Unfortunately, due to this issue, I am not able to focus completely on my studies and cannot sleep properly for the last two weeks. Moreover, it is gradually affecting negatively on my health due to lack of proper sleep.

I request you to kindly pay attention to this matter. It would be really helpful for me if you ask my neighbour to consider this issue, and keep the volume low especially at night because it also disturbs other people of surroundings as well.

Kind regards,

Bushra

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that the noise has been happening for two weeks, describe its effects on your studies, sleep and health, and ask the agency to intervene. The detail that you are a research student who studies late helps explain why the noise is particularly disruptive. Your request is also specific, asking the agency to speak to the neighbour and encourage lower volume at night. To develop the response further, clarify when the problem first began in relation to the neighbour moving in, and make the requested action slightly more definite, such as asking the agency to remind the tenant of quiet-hour rules. Overall, the relevant ideas are clear and supported, though a little more precision would strengthen them.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the tenancy and complaint, explain the duration and circumstances, describe the consequences, and finish with a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Unfortunately” and “Moreover” make the effects easy to follow. The letter also has a recognisable opening and closing. Some connections could be more precise: “which lead me to inform you” links the duration to your decision awkwardly, and the final sentence combines the request with a broad claim about other residents. A clearer sequence of shorter points, with references such as “this disturbance” used consistently, would make the cohesion more natural and less dependent on explicit linking phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to explain the complaint and its impact, including “peaceful environment,” “focus,” “properly,” and “affecting … my health.” These choices make the situation understandable and convey its seriousness. There are, however, some inaccurate or repetitive expressions that limit precision: “very loud loud” repeats an adjective, “on daily basis” is not the natural phrase, and “affecting negatively on my health” uses an awkward collocation. “Other people of surroundings” is also unclear. Aim for more natural complaint-letter phrasing and precise collocations while keeping the tone polite. For example, “disturbance,” “every night,” and “nearby residents” would express these ideas more idiomatically.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, such as the relative clause in “My new neighbour who rented the flat from you a month ago…” and the conditional request beginning “It would be really helpful…”. Meaning remains clear throughout. Some grammatical errors remain, including subject–verb agreement in “which lead me,” the missing article in “on daily basis,” and the tense construction “cannot sleep properly for the last two weeks,” where a present perfect form would be more suitable. The opening also uses “Dear Sir,” rather than the task’s specified greeting. Greater control of agreement, articles and time expressions, alongside a few carefully checked sentence structures, would improve accuracy.
