Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing in regards to the flat you rented out to me in August 20th 2026. Since September 5th 2026 up until date, my neighbour who rented the flat opposite me who is also from your agency plays very loud video games at night.

I have been having severe migraine and inability to function properly as a result of pooor sleep and inappropriate rest at night. Also, has really been challenging for me as my employer complains and threatens to sanction me if i keep on sleeping on duty. Moreover, it is a big threat on my health, as there are various health conditions associated with not getting enough rest or sleep.

I would like to move to the vacant flat that is far from my neighbour, or advice my neighbor to always bring down the volume of his video game at midnight. Also, a rule should be made, stating that no tenant should play any loud music or video game either during the day or at midnight.

Thank you for your concern as I patiently awaits you response.

yours faithfully,

Choice Ighenegbale.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three required points and maintain a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that the noise began on 5 September, describe its effects on your sleep, health and work, and request either a move or action from the agency. The consequences, especially your employer’s warning, help support the complaint. The requested remedies are also clear, although the proposed rule against loud music or games “during the day” is broader than the late-night problem described and could be more specifically justified. To strengthen the letter further, state the hours when the gaming occurs and make your preferred solution explicit, while keeping the alternative request focused on the neighbour’s late-night noise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression from the reason for writing, to the effects of the noise, and then to the action you want. Linking expressions such as “Also” and “Moreover” help connect the consequences, and the final paragraph makes your requests easy to identify. The overall organisation is effective for a formal complaint. Some connections are less smooth: the move from your health effects to your employer’s complaint could be integrated more naturally, and the two proposed remedies would be clearer if presented as a preferred option followed by an alternative. A separate closing paragraph and more consistent paragraph spacing would also make the letter’s structure easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to explain the complaint and its consequences, including “severe migraine,” “vacant flat,” and “sanction me.” These choices communicate the seriousness of the situation, and the meaning remains clear. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural expressions: “in regards to” is less suitable than a standard formal opening, “inappropriate rest” does not naturally describe poor sleep, and “a big threat on my health” uses an awkward collocation. The spelling error “pooor” and the phrase “bring down the volume” also reduce precision. Aim for natural complaint-letter wording and check spelling and collocations, especially when using less common vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a time clause beginning “Since September 5th” and a longer sentence explaining the effects on your health and work. The main message is understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Since … up until date” does not form a complete, natural time expression, and “Also, has really been challenging” is missing a clear subject. There are also agreement and verb-form problems in “I patiently awaits” and “my neighbour … plays” after the past-tense description of the rental. Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, including lowercase “i” and the closing “yours faithfully.” Review tense consistency, complete sentence structure, and subject–verb agreement to improve accuracy.
