Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Madam,

I am writing this letter as regards my neighbour, who also uses this same agency, to discuss a problem that has been ongoing for a while, which is playing of loud video games at night, and has been quite regular, and causes a major disruption to me.

This issue started about one month ago, and have been enduring this over the night, sometimes he begins from 9pm to 4 am, which is occurs throughout still dawn.

This noise affects me alot, as i come back from work stressed, wanting to rest out quietly, and prepare for work the next morning, but due to this i get headaches and body pain, this makes me unable to carry out my late night activies as i would want.

I would want the agency to look into this, and have a meeting with my neighbour so he could be aware of how this affect me, and limit this convinence as well. I hope this noise reduced, or ends totally.

Your Faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three required points: you say the noise began “about one month ago,” describe its late-night timing and effects on your rest and health, and ask the agency to speak with your neighbour and reduce the disturbance. The purpose of the letter is clear and the details are relevant. However, the request could be more fully developed: for example, ask the agency to remind the neighbour of quiet hours or take further action if the noise continues. The impact is also somewhat unclear in “unable to carry out my late night activities,” since the main problem described is difficulty resting and preparing for work. A more precise explanation and a specific request would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible overall order: it introduces the complaint, explains when it began, describes its effects, and ends with a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these points, and phrases such as “This issue started” and “This noise affects me” guide the reader. However, some sentences contain too many ideas joined by commas and “and,” particularly the opening sentence, so the progression can feel crowded. The timing sentence is also difficult to follow because “sometimes he begins from 9pm to 4 am” and “which is occurs throughout still dawn” do not connect clearly. Use shorter sentences and clearer links between the hours, the frequency, and the effect on you.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for a complaint, including “ongoing,” “major disruption,” “headaches,” and “limit,” so the reader can understand the situation. There are also attempts to express the impact in specific terms. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “rest out quietly,” “enduring this over the night,” and “limit this convinence.” “Convinence” is also misspelled, and “alot” should be written as two words. These errors sometimes make the intended meaning harder to interpret. Aim for natural phrases commonly used in formal complaints, such as “get some rest,” “the noise continues throughout the night,” and “reduce the noise.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the main message remains understandable. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction occur in several places. For example, “This issue started about one month ago, and have been enduring this” lacks a clear subject for the second verb, while “which is occurs” combines incompatible verb forms. In “how this affect me,” the verb does not agree with its subject, and “I hope this noise reduced” needs a correctly formed verb phrase. The opening sentence also runs on through several clauses. Check that each clause has a clear subject and correctly formed verb, and use full stops to separate complete ideas.
