Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I have been living in your flat from last two months. All was going well , the problem arose when a new neighbour shifted next to my flat. Actually , he used to play videos games late night and it really affects my study.

I do work in day time and study late night, as my exams are near so that loud noise really disturbing me. I tried many times to talk to the neighbour about that issue and he assures me that next time he will lower the volume but the problem is still there.

Now I want you to talk to him personally, or I request you to please change my flat location near some quiet place so that i would be able to prepare for my exams peacefully. It will be more suitable if you shift my neighbour to some other flat.

I am looking forward to your concern.

Yours faithfully

Munazzah

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you explain that the issue began when a new neighbour moved in, describe the effect on your exam preparation, and ask the agency to speak to him or arrange a quieter flat. The purpose is clear and the tone is generally appropriate for a formal complaint. The request to move the neighbour, however, is not explained as fully as your request for help with the noise, and the opening does not clearly state when the late-night gaming itself began. To strengthen the response, give a more precise timeframe and explain the practical outcome you expect, such as a warning or enforcement of quiet hours. The relevant ideas are present, but some could be developed more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression: it introduces the problem, explains its impact and your attempts to resolve it, then makes requests. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “as my exams are near” help connect the noise to its consequences. Some connections are less smooth, however. “All was going well” moves abruptly into the new neighbour’s arrival, while “Now I want you” shifts quickly from the failed conversation to several possible solutions. The final request to move the neighbour also partly repeats the earlier request to change your flat. Group the requested actions in a clearer order and use more precise references to distinguish the neighbour’s behaviour from the agency’s possible response.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the complaint, using relevant terms such as “loud noise,” “lower the volume,” “exams,” and “prepare.” You also attempt more formal wording with “I am looking forward to your concern,” although this phrase is not a natural way to close a request. Several word-choice and collocation errors reduce precision, including “videos games,” “shifted next to my flat,” and “flat location near some quiet place.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main issue, but they make the letter sound less fluent and occasionally unclear. Aim for natural combinations such as “play video games,” “moved into the flat next door,” and “move me to a quieter flat,” while maintaining a consistent formal register.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause in “as my exams are near” and the contrast in “but the problem is still there.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “I have been living in your flat from last two months” uses an incorrect preposition and time expression; “it really affects my study” has an unclear tense relationship; and “that loud noise really disturbing me” is missing a finite verb. There are also errors in articles and sentence punctuation, such as “a new neighbour” being followed by a comma splice. Practise accurate present perfect time expressions and complete verb forms, then check sentence boundaries and capitalisation.
