Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writting this letter to complain about the very loud sound of video games that my neighbor produce late at night everytime which they also rent at in this same accomodation agency.

The night was kept getting worse day by day because of the people who are my neighbors at the moment. Just because of the loud sounds that I get everytime at night at first is torelable; hovever this kept on going for a week now so it made my sleeping schedule not great and everytime I get up for work I feel heavy and tired of the day.

I would like that you make a solution on this part of my complaint that I suggest that you make a rule within the proximity of each apartment have a time schedule of no noise. So everybody can have a great night and relax to their homes and not bother anyone. I hope that you consider my suggestion and make my neighbors accountable to what they have done.

Kind regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you identify the neighbour’s late-night gaming, explain that the problem has continued for a week and affects your sleep and energy at work, and ask the agency to introduce quiet hours and hold the neighbours accountable. These details make the complaint relevant and give the reader a clear sense of the impact. However, the start of the problem is not fully clear: “The night was kept getting worse day by day” does not say precisely when the noise first began. Your proposed solution is also somewhat general; you could request that the agency contact the neighbour directly and explain the building’s noise rules. Developing these points more specifically would make the letter more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall shape: you introduce the complaint, describe its effects, and then state what action you want. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “however” and “so” help connect cause and result. This meets the task’s basic organisational needs. Some links are less clear or feel mechanical, though. For example, “The night was kept getting worse day by day because of the people who are my neighbors at the moment” is difficult to follow, and the final paragraph combines your request, suggestion, and hoped-for outcome in a long sequence. Use clearer topic sentences and separate the agency’s requested action from the broader suggestion about quiet hours.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough relevant vocabulary to communicate the complaint, including “loud sound of video games,” “sleeping schedule,” “tired,” and “no noise.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “make my neighbors accountable.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “the night was kept getting worse,” “make a solution,” and “relax to their homes.” Spelling errors such as “writting,” “accomodation,” and “torelable” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your main message, but they limit precision and naturalness. Practise common formal complaint phrases and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a sentence explaining the effect of the noise: “it made my sleeping schedule not great and everytime I get up for work I feel heavy and tired.” The main message remains understandable, and you use some linking structures to show cause and contrast. However, some sentence patterns and verb forms are inaccurate. For example, “my neighbor produce” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “I would like that you make a solution” is not a well-formed request. The opening sentence also has an unclear structure, and the long sentence beginning “Just because of the loud sounds” is difficult to control. Aim for shorter, complete sentences and practise polite request forms such as “I would appreciate it if you could…”
