Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to formally lodge a complain about my neighbour who plays loud video games at night.
I am resident of 9/22 Skyraise Building since 15th September 2026. Recently, a young adult from Murrey College has rented a flat besides my accommodation. He plays loud video games late at night which is bothering me a lot.
I am a working professional and need an 8 hours of sleep so that I can concentrate on my work during day time. Unfortuntely, due to a lot of noise I am unable to sleep peacefully since he came. Moreover, this is disturbing my routine as well as my productivity at work. I tried talking to him but he did not pay any attention to my request.
I would really appreciate if you ask him to change his behaviour or if he want to play game use headphones and take care of neighbourhood. Inform him about the agency policy about noise in residential areas. I hope you will resolve my issue on priority basis.
Yours sincerely,
Sana

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three required points: it identifies the neighbour’s late-night gaming, explains the effect on your sleep and work, and asks the agency to intervene. The request to remind him of the noise policy and suggest headphones is practical. You also establish that the problem began after he moved in, but the timing is only broadly described as “since he came”; a clearer indication of when the noise started would make this point more complete. The impact is relevant, though the effect on your work is stated generally rather than illustrated. The formal purpose and overall position are clear, with some details already developed, but a little more precise support would strengthen the letter further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, give context, describe its effects, and then make a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Unfortunately” guide the reader through the explanation. The reference to having tried to speak to the neighbour also connects the problem to your request for agency action. Some transitions and phrasing are slightly mechanical, and the final paragraph combines several requests in one long sentence, making the desired action less easy to follow. Separate the requests and state the main action first; this would make the organisation and cohesion more flexible while preserving the clear overall structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “formally lodge a complaint,” “productivity,” and “residential areas.” These choices communicate the issue and its consequences clearly. There are, however, some spelling and word-choice or collocation errors, such as “complain” for “complaint,” “besides my accommodation” where “next to my flat” is intended, and “take care of neighbourhood,” which is not a natural expression in this context. “On priority basis” is also awkward; “as soon as possible” would sound more idiomatic. Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than adding formal-sounding phrases, and check spelling carefully to improve precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes both simple and more developed sentence forms, for example the sentence beginning “I am a working professional and need…” and the explanation introduced by “Moreover.” Meaning remains clear despite some grammatical errors. These include a missing article in “I am resident,” the unnecessary article in “need an 8 hours of sleep,” and the conditional structure “if he want to play game,” which needs corrected agreement and plural forms. The opening “Dear Sir” also does not follow the requested salutation. Review articles, subject–verb agreement, and conditional clauses, and break up the long final sentence so that each request is expressed in a controlled structure. More accurate sentences would make the formal tone more consistent.
