Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing regarding complaining about my noisy neighbours and their inadmissible behaviour. Both of us have rent flat from your company.

The problem starts three days ago, when they invited their friends and plays video games lately at night. A very loud sound was coming from their door. Take into consideration that the entrance of both our appartement are very close.

This noise has affect my sleeping quality and disturbed my mental health, specialy on this period I am preparing my final exams next week and I really need to focus. I understand that they are free in their house but I also need some peace.

I would be happy if you talk to them and explain that they have to respect the agreements and stop making loud sounds at night and disturb other people.

I am available for any further informations.

Yours Faithfully,

Kawther

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose. You identify when the issue began (“three days ago”), explain its effect on your sleep and exam preparation, and request that the agency speak to the neighbours and remind them to respect the agreement. These details make the complaint relevant and give the agency a practical action to take. To develop the response further, clarify whether the noise has continued on multiple nights and specify the hours or a preferred outcome, such as quiet after a particular time. The request is clear, though a little general; more precise details would make the proposed action better supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: it introduces the complaint, gives the background, describes the impact, and ends with a request and polite closing. Paragraphing helps separate these functions, and links such as “This noise” and “I understand” make the relationship between ideas easy to follow. The sequence is logical throughout. To make the organisation more polished, connect the opening more directly to the specific late-night gaming problem, and ensure each paragraph develops one point without abrupt phrasing. For example, the transition from the neighbours inviting friends to the sound coming from their door could be made more explicit. Overall, the reader can follow the complaint and requested action without difficulty.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to a formal complaint, including “noisy neighbours,” “sleeping quality,” “mental health,” and “respect the agreements.” The meaning is generally clear, but several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision. “Inadmissible behaviour” is not a natural description of this situation, while “plays video games lately at night” does not express the timing clearly. There are also spelling and word-form slips, such as “appartement,” “specialy,” and “informations.” Aim for familiar, accurate phrases rather than ambitious wording: for example, describe the noise as “excessively loud” and say it “has disrupted my sleep.” This would make the complaint sound more natural and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “I understand that they are free in their house but I also need some peace.” However, errors in verb forms, tense, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to affect fluency. Examples include “Both of us have rent flat,” “The problem starts three days ago,” and “they invited their friends and plays video games.” The sentence beginning “Take into consideration that” is also not formed naturally as a complete instruction or clause. Practise keeping past events consistently in the past and checking subject–verb agreement and article use. More accurate control of these basic patterns would make the letter easier to read while preserving its clear message.
