Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about my neighbours who rent their house from your agency, they plays loud video games late at night.

This problem began few days ago when they play a video games late at night, they speak very loud and now this problem is continue till today.

This noice affects both my health and my work. I am an office person and I have to complete sevral assignments, because of this sound I can not focus on my work and sleep properly. Therefore, I get up late in the morning and always in rush for my work.

I would appreciate it if some striter rules and regulations could be implemented for the noise late at night and also few fines if any one would not follow the rules properly.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my request. If you need any further information regarding this metter, plese let me know. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Preet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points: it identifies when the noise began, explains its effects on sleep and work, and asks the agency to introduce rules and penalties. The purpose is clear from the opening complaint, and the request to “implement” stricter rules gives the agency a definite action to consider. The effects are also supported with relevant details, such as difficulty focusing and being late for work. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the timeline: “a few days ago” is followed by the unclear statement that the problem “is continue till today.” You could also specify a practical step, such as contacting the neighbour or enforcing quiet hours, rather than relying mainly on general rules and fines.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear overall progression: complaint and background, effects on you, requested action, and a polite closing. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Therefore” and “If you need any further information” support the flow. The main ideas are easy to follow, which gives the letter a coherent structure. Some connections within sentences are less controlled, however. In the opening, a comma joins two complete thoughts, and the second paragraph repeats “late at night” while moving between the beginning of the problem and its continuation. Separating these ideas into shorter sentences and using clearer time references would make the progression smoother and the cohesion less dependent on repeated wording.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the complaint, including “loud video games,” “affects,” “assignments,” and “rules and regulations.” The wording is generally understandable, but the range is limited and several spelling or word-choice errors reduce precision: “noice,” “sevral,” “striter,” “metter,” and “plese.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “I am an office person” and “few fines.” These choices keep the message clear overall but do not show consistent control of collocation or spelling. Aim for more precise, natural expressions—for example, “office worker,” “impose fines,” and “noise disturbance”—and proofread carefully for spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes simple statements and some attempts to connect ideas, for example, “because of this sound I can not focus on my work and sleep properly.” However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the letter awkward. In the opening, “my neighbours … they plays” has faulty agreement and an unnecessary repeated subject. The timeline sentence also has incorrect verb forms: “when they play” and “this problem is continue.” Other examples include “began few days ago” and “if any one would not follow,” where articles and conditional structure need attention. Practise accurate past-tense narration and conditional requests, and break long sentences into clear clauses.
