Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction concerning the occupant of room 43, living next to me.
About a fortnight ago, the resident in room 43 started playing load video games late into the night, and it has remained his habit ever since. Although I have tried several times to persuade him to stop mainly because this act profoundly disrupts my natural sleep pattern, resulting in fragmenting my daytime concentration and alertness, the effort does not yield positive result.
owning to that, I would appreciate if you could intervene by talking to him, or even better allow me to relocate to room 464 which is empty and unaffected by the loud sound. Please I would be grateful if you give me your response before the end of this month, else I will have no other option than to move out of the compound when my rent expired.
I look forward to a prompt response.
Yours sincerely,
Egbodo victor

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three requested points: the problem began “about a fortnight ago,” you explain that it disrupts sleep and daytime concentration, and you ask the agency to speak to the neighbour or let you relocate. Your purpose and requested action are clear throughout, and the possible consequence of moving out adds a relevant sense of urgency. The impact is explained, although the effect on your daily life could be developed with a more specific example, and the request for intervention could be framed more diplomatically. To strengthen the letter further, clarify whether room 464 is in the same building and state what outcome you would prefer if relocation is not possible.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression from the complaint, to its effects, and then to the action you want, with an appropriate opening and closing. Paragraphing helps separate the background from your request, and links such as “Although” and “resulting in” show relationships between ideas. The final paragraph, however, combines the request, relocation option, deadline, and threat to move out in one long sequence, so the reader has to work harder to distinguish the main request from its conditions. Separate these points into shorter sentences and paragraphs. Also make the connection between your attempts to persuade the neighbour and the agency’s next steps more explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range for a formal complaint, including “express my dissatisfaction,” “profoundly disrupts,” “intervene,” and “prompt response.” These choices show an attempt to use more precise and less common language, and the meaning remains clear. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “load video games” should be “loud video games,” “natural sleep pattern” is less idiomatic than “normal sleep pattern,” and “the effort does not yield positive result” is awkward. “Room” and “resident” are also repeated where some variation would help. Aim for natural, accurate combinations rather than more elaborate phrasing; this would make the formal tone more fluent and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including the sentence beginning “Although I have tried several times” and the conditional “else I will have no other option.” These allow you to explain cause and consequence, and the message is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in the long sentence about the effects of the noise and in the final request. For example, “I would appreciate if” needs “I would appreciate it if,” while “if you give me your response” would be more natural as “if you could respond.” The phrase “when my rent expired” also needs a future form such as “expires.” Use shorter sentences to control these structures and check articles, verb forms, and punctuation.
