Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I'm writing to express my concerns about the excessive video game noice comming from my neighbours house (apparment 2A) at late hours. Mentioned noice strated couple of weeks ago and ever since then it has become an extreme inconveniece.

To elaborate more on this issue, as of today, these excessive noices are distrupting our appartment for more than two weeks. Usuelly these noices are starting from 10.00 p.m till 3.00am evey weekday. As you can understand, due to this issue it has been difficult to maintain a continues sleep. Because of the limited sleep at night, it has been hard to maintain attention during my work hours. Furthermore, we have informed the current tenants about this issue multiple times, but still the problem remain without any solutions.

I would like to kindly request you to take imediate action regarding this matter. It would be highly appriciated, If you can advice the neighbouring tenats to keep the voulme down at night.

Thank you for you time and consideration that you put on to this matter.

Sincerely,

Lanka De Alwis.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three required points and maintain a clear, appropriately formal purpose: you explain that the noise began “a couple of weeks ago,” describe its effect on your sleep and work, and ask the agency to intervene by advising the tenants to lower the volume. The specific hours, from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. on weekdays, help make the complaint concrete. The impact is also supported with relevant details, including difficulty maintaining sleep and attention at work. To develop the request further, specify a practical next step, such as asking the agency to contact the tenants promptly and follow up if the disturbance continues. Overall, the letter fulfils the task clearly, with room to make the proposed action more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: it introduces the complaint, explains the timing and effects, then makes a request and closes politely. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “Because of this issue” help connect the details. The reader can follow the main point throughout. Some connections are less smooth or repetitive, however: “To elaborate more on this issue” is wordy, and the opening paragraph already says the noise began a couple of weeks ago before the next paragraph repeats that it has continued for more than two weeks. Streamlining this repetition and using more direct transitions would make the progression more flexible and natural while preserving the clear overall organisation.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant complaint vocabulary, including “excessive,” “disrupting,” “maintain attention,” and “take immediate action,” so the message is understandable and suited to the situation. However, spelling errors are noticeable throughout, including “noice,” “comming,” “inconveniece,” and “appriciated,” and several word choices or collocations are awkward. For example, “these excessive noises are disrupting our apartment” would be more naturally expressed as “the noise is disturbing us,” while “maintain a continues sleep” is not idiomatic. The range is sufficient to communicate the complaint, but more accurate spelling and natural combinations of words are needed for clearer, more controlled expression. Proofreading and learning common formal complaint phrases would help.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the cause-and-effect explanation “Because of the limited sleep at night, it has been hard to maintain attention during my work hours.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the letter’s overall structure is easy to follow. Some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Mentioned noise started couple of weeks ago” needs a clear subject and article (“The noise started a couple of weeks ago”), and “the problem remain” should be “the problem remains.” In “I would like to kindly request you to take immediate action,” the verb pattern is more natural as “request that you take immediate action.” Review articles, agreement, and verb patterns, and check punctuation around the closing request; these changes would improve accuracy while retaining your sentence variety.
