Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to bring your attention to an issue regarding extreme noise caused by my neighbour who rents their flat from your organisation.

I have been facing this issue for a month now. After coming from work, I usually prepare to sleep. But because of very loud sound from the video games played by my neighbour, It feels impossible to sleep. I have been taking pain killers beacuse of the headache caused by extreme noise of the video games. Also, due to lack of sleep, I could not keep up my tasks efficiently in the office, and my boss is also complaining about my performance lately.

I request you to take necassary action regarding my issue. I suggest to inform the neighbour to lower the sound of their video games, so the other neighbours could sleep peacfully and start their day in a fresh mood.

I shall be grateful if you entertain my request on priority.

Thanks,

Yours Faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose. You identify the problem’s duration (“for a month”), explain its effects through difficulty sleeping, headaches, and reduced work performance, and request that the agency ask the neighbour to lower the volume. These details make the complaint relevant and supported. To strengthen the response further, make the start of the problem more precise if possible, and specify a practical action or follow-up—for example, asking the agency to contact the neighbour and confirm what steps will be taken. The request is clear, though the proposed solution is somewhat general. Overall, the key information is covered and the reader can understand what you want the agency to do.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, describe its duration and effects, then make a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “But because,” “Also,” and “so” show how the ideas relate. The sequence from noise to sleep problems and then workplace consequences is easy to follow. Some connections are slightly mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Also” and “so,” and the closing phrases (“Thanks” and “Yours Faithfully”) are not smoothly integrated with the formal tone. To improve, use a wider range of natural transitions and keep the sign-off convention consistent. The overall organisation remains clear and logical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “bring your attention,” “extreme noise,” “necessary action,” and “performance.” These choices communicate the issue and its consequences clearly. There are, however, some spelling errors, including “beacuse,” “necassary,” and “peacfully,” and a few phrases are less natural or precise, such as “entertain my request” and “lower the sound.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit the accuracy and naturalness of the vocabulary. Aim for conventional complaint-letter expressions and check spelling carefully. More precise collocations would make the request sound more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple sentences and more developed structures, such as “I suggest to inform the neighbour to lower the sound … so the other neighbours could sleep.” The main message is consistently understandable, and you use time and cause relationships to explain the effects of the noise. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. For example, “I suggest to inform” would be more accurately formed as “I suggest informing” or “I suggest that you inform,” while “It” after a full stop should begin with a lowercase letter in this context. The sentence beginning “After coming from work” also has an unclear subject. Review verb patterns after “suggest” and make sure introductory phrases clearly refer to the person doing the action.
