Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I want to lodge a noise complaint on my neighbor who lives in the flat 106. I am a renter in ZXC building flat 105 under DIDI agency.
Recently, the person who is living in the unit beside mine has been making loud noises every late night. I believe that he is playing online video games and the sounds from it also adds up the noisy background that I'm hearing through the wall. It begun last Friday and did not stop until today.
This noise affects my mental and physical health significantly as I couldn't have a proper sleep due to it. I wake up feeling exhausted every morning because of not getting enough sleep, and it cause disadvantages in my daily activities—I could not focus well and too sleepy to function at work.
I would want the agency to help me give a warning to him in order make him halt the activities that makes loud noises specially during night time.
I hope that you can help me with this inconvenience and asking for your promt action to it.
Sincerely,
PJAM

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you identify the neighbour, explain that the noise began last Friday, describe its effects on your sleep and work, and request that the agency issue a warning. The details about waking exhausted and struggling to focus help support the complaint rather than leaving it as a bare assertion. The requested action is also clear, although it could be developed further by asking the agency to investigate or ensure the noise stops during late-night hours. Overall, the task is handled clearly and relevantly; a more specific, fully framed request would make the response more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear progression from identifying the complaint, to describing when it began, explaining its impact, and requesting action. Separate paragraphs make these stages easy to follow, and links such as “because” and “and” show how the noise affects your daily life. The closing is also appropriate for a formal complaint. Some connections are less smooth, however: “It begun last Friday and did not stop until today” is unclear about whether the noise is continuous or recurring, and the final sentence combines a hope for help with a request for action awkwardly. More precise time references and a cleaner closing would strengthen the flow and make cohesion feel less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “lodge a noise complaint,” “significantly,” “exhausted,” and “daily activities.” These choices communicate the issue and its consequences clearly. Some word choices and collocations are less natural or precise, such as “complaint on my neighbor,” “noisy background,” and “give a warning to him.” “Disadvantages in my daily activities” also does not express the intended impact idiomatically, while “promt” is misspelled. These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit the precision and naturalness of the letter. Aim for standard complaint phrases and check spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes both simple statements and longer sentences, for example the sentence explaining that poor sleep leaves you exhausted and unable to focus at work. Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. In “the sounds from it also adds up,” the plural subject requires “add”; “It begun” should be “It began”; and “it cause disadvantages” needs a past-tense verb and a clearer grammatical construction. The request “in order make him halt” is missing “to,” and “activities that makes” has a subject–verb agreement error. These are noticeable but rarely obstruct the message. Review verb forms, agreement, and infinitive patterns to improve accuracy while retaining sentence variety.
