IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You rent a flat from an accommodation agency. Your neighbour who rents their flat from the same agency plays very loud video games late at night.
Write a letter to the accommodation agency. In your letter
explain when the problem began
describe how the noise affects you
say what you would like the agency to do
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to express my serious concern over loud video games played by my neighbour of unit 304. It started since last October during late nights. Despite of my efforts to contact them directly to discuss the issue, nothing had been changed ever since. Because of it, I started suffering from sleep deprivation and it is adversely impacting my performance at work. This has significantly increased my stress levels, to the point that I have had to consult a pscychiatrist.
It would be great if you take necessary actions to correct this behaviour. I am also aware about our apartment management's policies regarding noise pollution. If the issue remains unresolved, I have to make a complaint to the city's noise bylaw enforcement to enforce city's noise regulations.
I hope you treat this matter urgently, and provide favourable solution as soon as possible. Also keep me informed about the corrective actions you take.
Sincerely,
Ripesh(Unit 303)

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The letter covers all three required points clearly and gives a well-developed account of the problem. You identify when it began (“last October”), explain its effects through sleep deprivation, reduced work performance and increased stress, and state what you want the agency to do. Mentioning that you have already tried to contact the neighbour and may approach the city’s noise bylaw enforcement also makes your request persuasive and specific. The purpose and urgency are clear throughout, with an appropriate formal closing. To make the response even more complete, specify a concrete action for the agency, such as contacting the neighbour or enforcing the building’s quiet-hours policy, rather than relying mainly on the general phrase “take necessary actions.”
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the noise, describe your attempts to resolve it and its effects, then make a request and explain a possible next step. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “Because of it” and “If the issue remains unresolved” help connect cause and consequence. The letter is easy to follow overall. Some transitions and references are less natural or precise, however: “It started since last October” and “nothing had been changed ever since” make the timeline harder to process, while “Also keep me informed” feels slightly abrupt after the request for a solution. Use more natural time links and connect the final requests more smoothly to strengthen the progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of formal and topic-relevant vocabulary, including “serious concern,” “sleep deprivation,” “adversely impacting,” and “noise regulations.” These choices communicate the seriousness of the situation and show some awareness of formal letter style. However, several collocations or word forms are inaccurate or awkward, such as “contact them directly to discuss the issue” being followed by “nothing had been changed,” and “favourable solution.” There is also a spelling error in “pscyhiatrist.” These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit the naturalness and precision of the vocabulary. Aim for conventional combinations such as “the situation has not changed” and proofread less familiar words carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex structures, including a sentence explaining the consequences of the noise and a conditional sentence beginning “If the issue remains unresolved.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the errors rarely obstruct meaning. Some grammatical patterns need more reliable control: “It started since last October” combines the past simple with an unsuitable time expression, and “Despite of my efforts” uses an incorrect preposition after “despite.” The sentence “If the issue remains unresolved, I have to make a complaint” also needs a more suitable modal for a future intention, such as “I will have to.” Practise these time, preposition and conditional patterns while retaining your varied sentence forms.
