Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complaint about the excessive noise at late night from my next door neighbour. Unfortunately, this issue is causing considerable inconvenience.

I rented this flat from you approximately two weeks ago. Initially, ambience of the corridor was quiet and calm; however, over the past few days, my next door neighbour plays very loud music and video games late at night which often interrupt my sleep resulting in less productivity during the day. Morever, they arrange parties only late at night.

This excessive noise has been affecting me in numerous ways. I rented this flat because of its quiet and congenial ambience as I am preparing for my NEET exam but unfortunately, I am unable to concentrate on my studies. I haven't took proper sleep since they moved-in. I tried talking to them about this loud sounds at night but the problem persists.

I would appreciate it if you could either arrange a different flat for me or remind them the consequence of violating rules. If neither of this works, I would like to request a full refund.

I look forward to your prompt response and a satisfactory resolution to this matter,

Yours faithfully,

Sukhdeep Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that the problem began “over the past few days,” describe disrupted sleep and difficulty concentrating on NEET preparation, and request action from the agency. The specific account of having tried to speak to the neighbours also helps explain why intervention is needed. Your proposed remedies—moving you or reminding the neighbours of the rules—are clear, although asking for a full refund if these fail is less directly connected to resolving the noise and could be framed more diplomatically. To strengthen the response further, clarify when the neighbours moved in or when the late-night gaming first started, and specify the practical action you expect the agency to take.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression from the complaint, to its effects, and then to the requested resolution. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “however,” “Morever,” and “If neither of this works” help connect ideas. The reader can follow the main message throughout. Some connections are less smooth: the opening paragraph says the noise is from a neighbour, while the next introduces the flat’s earlier quiet atmosphere before explaining the recent change. The final paragraph also combines several alternatives in one sentence, making the request slightly less focused. Grouping the timeline and noise details together, then presenting one clear preferred action followed by a fallback, would make the progression more polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “excessive noise,” “considerable inconvenience,” “congenial ambience,” and “satisfactory resolution.” These choices show some ambition and help convey the seriousness of the problem. However, several word-choice, collocation, or spelling slips reduce precision: “complaint” is used where the verb “complain” is needed, “Morever” is misspelled, and “loud sounds” is less natural than “loud noise.” “Ambience” is also repeated, and “remind them the consequence” is not idiomatic. Aim for natural, precise phrases rather than elevated wording where a simpler expression is more accurate; this would improve flexibility and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the contrast introduced by “however” and the conditional request beginning “I would appreciate it if…”. Meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors are present. For example, “I am writing to complaint” should use the verb form “complain”; “I haven't took proper sleep” needs a correct past participle and more natural construction; and “If neither of this works” has a number-agreement problem. In “my next door neighbour plays … which often interrupt my sleep,” the relative clause does not agree clearly with its intended subject. Review verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction, while retaining the range of structures you attempt.
