Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this in response to express my dissatisfaction due to presence of noise pollution in the late night.

I moved from Surrey to Coquitlam because of my college. It saves my time and travelling cost as well. Last week, my neighbours have changed their apartment to other city and new ones started living in that apartment. I am facing the problem of noise pollution from the first day, they came here. I am discomfortable in this environment as they play video games with loud voice.

There are various problems that I faced. The major one is that I can not concentrate on my studies. However, my final exams are coming , next week. Moreover, my family face makor

issue while sleeping and it may lead to health related problems.

To resolve this problem, I would like you to forwad a warning letter to my neighbour. My parents already talked to him about this concern , however, he has ignored it. Otherwise, I will definitely submit a police report towards him to the governemnt in order to take action.

I would apprecite it if you look into this matter seriously.

Yours sincerely,

Jasmeen Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you explain that the noise began when new neighbours moved in last week, describe its effects on your studies and your family’s sleep, and ask the agency to send a warning. The reference to your final exams makes the impact more specific, and mentioning that your parents have already spoken to the neighbour adds useful context. This covers the task well, with a clear purpose throughout. However, some details are less fully developed: for example, you could specify the late-night hours or how often the gaming continues, and explain what action you expect if a warning does not work. The threat to report the neighbour to the police is also less appropriate than a clear request for the agency to follow its complaint procedure.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: it introduces the complaint, gives background and effects, then requests action and closes politely. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and connectors such as “Moreover” and “To resolve this problem” make the relationships between ideas clear. At times, however, the progression is slightly mechanical or unclear. “There are various problems that I faced” announces a list, but the next sentence gives only one main study-related problem before moving to the family’s sleep. The opening background about moving from Surrey is not clearly linked to the complaint. Use more direct transitions and make references explicit—for instance, clarify that “they” means the new neighbours—and keep each paragraph focused on one purpose.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “concentrate,” “final exams,” “warning letter,” and “health related problems.” There are also attempts at more formal wording, such as “resolve this problem” and “look into this matter seriously.” However, several choices or spelling errors make the language less natural and sometimes distract the reader: “noise pollution” is less precise than “excessive noise,” “discomfortable” is not the appropriate word here, and “forward” and “appreciate” are misspelled. “Loud voice” is also an awkward collocation for video-game sound. Aim for precise, natural complaint-letter phrases, and proofread spelling and word forms so your adequate range is used more accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “because of my college” and a contrast introduced by “however.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “my neighbours have changed their apartment to other city” has problems with the verb pattern, article use and preposition; “from the first day, they came here” is not a natural or accurate time construction; and “my family face” has subject–verb agreement trouble. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with spaces before commas and a comma separating “coming” from “next week.” Review past-tense forms, articles, agreement and comma placement, while continuing to practise complex sentences.
