Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my concern with my neighbor who leaves adjacent to my door. I am your tenant from flat number #102 on Level 2. The tenants of Flat number #103 are bothering my peace.
Since two weeks, Our sleep is getting disturbed because of loud Video games played by my neighbors until late night. They scream amd shout loudly while playing on their play station which is frightening my little baby and in turn causing me problem to make him asleep again. I tried to knock their door and request them to slow down the volume and not to shout but they will not even address me by opening the door.
I request you to send them a warning to not disturb other tenants especially during late nights. You can also impose some fine for peope who plays loud sounds and disturb others. If the situation still persists, I would like to change my apartment and shift me to the vacant flat on level1.
I hope my concerns will be addressed and strict action is taken against them. Waiting for your reply.
Yours truly,
Riya.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that the disturbance began “two weeks” ago, describe the effect on your sleep and your baby, and ask the agency to warn the neighbours or impose a fine. The request to move to a vacant flat also gives the agency a practical alternative. These details extend the main ideas and make the complaint persuasive. To strengthen the response further, clarify the timing and pattern of the noise—for example, how many nights a week it occurs or how late it continues—and make the requested action more specific, such as asking the agency to contact the tenants promptly and confirm what steps it will take. Overall, the task is fully addressed, though some details could be developed more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall progression: it identifies the problem, explains its effects, and then sets out what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and phrases such as “Since two weeks” and “If the situation still persists” help connect events and requests. The organisation is therefore coherent, but some links are mechanical or unclear. For instance, “The tenants of Flat number #103 are bothering my peace” repeats the complaint before the next paragraph explains it, while “in turn causing me problem” makes the relationship between the baby’s distress and your difficulty less smooth. Use clearer transitions and references, and group the background and start date together before describing the consequences. This would make the progression more fluent and less repetitive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “express my concern,” “disturbed,” “warning,” and “impose some fine.” These choices communicate the issue and the action you expect. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “adjacent to my door” and “vacant flat,” although some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural: “leaves adjacent to my door” does not convey that the neighbour lives there, and “bothering my peace” is not a natural collocation. Spelling and word-form slips such as “amd” and “peope” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, conventional complaint language, such as “lives next door,” “disrupting my peace and quiet,” and “issue a formal warning.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes both simple statements and more developed sentences, including the sentence explaining that the noise frightens your baby and makes it difficult to settle him again. Meaning remains clear overall, but some grammatical errors occur in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “Since two weeks” should be “For the past two weeks,” and “people who plays” should be “people who play.” In “causing me problem to make him asleep again,” the structure and article are inaccurate; a clearer version is “making it difficult for me to get him back to sleep.” Check capitalisation within sentences, too, as in “Our sleep” and “Video games.” More consistent control of these patterns would improve accuracy while preserving your range of sentence forms.
