Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to complain about my neighbour's late-night loud noises of video games.

My neighbour rented this place six months ago, and I have not faced any issues since then. However, the problem began one week ago, when they started playing video games till 2 a.m.

The key issue is that they do this kind of noises everyday.

I am a workaholic person. I have to wake up at six in the morning to get to work on time. Since they started making noises at night, I am unable to sleep peacefully, which affects my health and work as well.

I would appreciate it if the agency could talk with them and make them stop playing games with loud music at night.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I will wait for your response.

Your Tenant,

Ray Shine

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose. You explain that the issue began one week ago, describe its effect by linking the noise to lost sleep, health, and work, and request that the agency speak to the neighbour. These details make the complaint understandable and relevant. The impact is particularly clear in the contrast between the late gaming and your need to wake at six. To strengthen the response further, develop the requested action more precisely—for example, ask the agency to remind the neighbour of quiet hours or confirm what steps it will take. The explanation of the problem is clear, though the effect on your health and work could be supported with a little more specific detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: purpose, background and timing, personal impact, requested action, and closing. Paragraph breaks help the reader follow these stages, while transitions such as “However” and “Since they started” show the relationship between events and consequences. The progression is logical and the reader can readily identify the complaint and the requested response. Some linking is slightly repetitive or mechanical, particularly the repeated references to the noise and the short sentence “The key issue is that they do this kind of noises everyday.” You could connect this point more smoothly to the preceding sentence and use clearer referencing, such as “This has happened every night since then.”

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for making the complaint clear, with useful task-related expressions such as “late-night,” “affects my health and work,” and “I would appreciate it if.” You also use a suitably polite register overall. However, some choices are unnatural or imprecise: “late-night loud noises of video games” is less idiomatic than “loud video-game noise late at night,” and “workaholic person” does not accurately express that you need to get up early for work. “Do this kind of noises” is also an awkward phrase. Aim for more natural collocations and precise wording, while keeping the direct, formal tone appropriate for an agency complaint.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast introduced by “However,” the time clause “when they started playing,” and the conditional-polite request “I would appreciate it if the agency could…”. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning without difficulty. Some grammatical errors remain, especially in “they do this kind of noises everyday,” where the demonstrative and noun number do not agree, and in “playing video games till 2 a.m.,” where the time expression would be more suitable as “until 2 a.m.” The sentence “My neighbour rented this place six months ago” also shifts tense awkwardly in context. More consistent tense control and accurate noun phrases would make the writing more polished.
