Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir/madam,

Hallo! I hope this letter finds you well.First,I want to take this opportunity to thanks you for the suitable and quick services that I have been enjoying since the day I rented your appartment on January 2022.I want to inform you that I am so disapointed by some noise polution that emerges as a result of loud video games that are played by one of the new tenant who joined this particular flat two months ago.

I am deeply uset with this kind of polution because I am staying with children who are about to sit for their certificate of secondary education coming this year and therefore they need enough time and a condusive environment for their studies. In additional,my wife just gave birth a month ago and the baby needs a silent atmosphere.

Therefore i would like to urge you to talk to this new tenant to control His actvities and use a proper volume at odd hours. If this could not work, then I am requesting you to change for me the house.

yours faithfully,

Onyango.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you say the noise began when a new tenant arrived two months ago, explain its effect on your children’s studies and your newborn’s need for quiet, and ask the agency to speak to the neighbour or move you. These details make the complaint relevant and your requested action is clear. However, the opening spends considerable space praising the agency, while the timing and impact could be explained more precisely—for example, state which nights or hours the gaming continues and how it affects sleep or study. The request to change your flat is also presented as an alternative without explaining whether you would prefer the agency to address the neighbour first. Developing these points more evenly would make the letter more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: a polite opening, an explanation of the noise and its effects, and a request for action. Linking expressions such as “because,” “therefore,” and “If this could not work” help show relationships between ideas, and the reader can follow your main purpose. The paragraphing also broadly separates the complaint from the requested solution. To make the progression more polished, use paragraph breaks consistently and avoid running words together after full stops, as in “well.First” and “studies.In.” The transition from the family’s circumstances to the agency’s action could also be smoother, with a brief sentence summarising the practical problem before making your request.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “noise pollution,” “condusive environment,” “odd hours,” and “control … volume.” These choices communicate the main issue, and phrases such as “I would like to urge you” show an attempt to use more formal language. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “appartment,” “disapointed,” “uset,” and “polution.” Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise: “control His activities” and “change for me the house” do not clearly express the intended request. Aim for accurate collocations and consistent formal wording, such as asking the agency to address the disturbance or arrange alternative accommodation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a sentence explaining that your children need a suitable study environment and a conditional request beginning “If this could not work.” The main message remains understandable, but errors in sentence construction and control are noticeable. For example, “I want to take this opportunity to thanks you” uses the wrong verb form after “to,” while “one of the new tenant who joined” has a number-agreement problem. The conditional “If this could not work” also needs a more accurate tense and structure. Punctuation and capitalisation are inconsistent, particularly after sentence boundaries and with “His.” Practise checking verb forms, agreement, and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at longer structures.
