Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to complain about disturbance caused by Mr. Smith's son Raj and his friends while playing a video games at late night.
Since the summer holidays have been started, a group of boys visits Raj everyday and play games. Initially I assumed that they might stop their behavior once they realize how much loud they are and make a unnecessary noise in the apartment. However, with the time it has been increase and gives more trouble to me.
I work in the Toronto, so I have to wake up early to reach at my workplace on time and due to get enough rest I sleep early but I could not sleep on time because of the yelling, laughing and loud track of the games. That impact on my performance and my mood.
I kindly request you to send them a notice to stop this immediately or fine them if necessary.
I hope you will take a reasonable steps to address this matter soon.
Thanking you in advance.
Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points: it identifies when the disturbance began (“Since the summer holidays”), explains its effects on your sleep, work performance and mood, and asks the agency to issue a notice or impose a fine. The complaint remains clear and appropriately formal, and the details about early starts and the noise make the impact understandable. To strengthen the response further, develop the requested action with a practical next step, such as asking the agency to contact the tenant and confirm what action will be taken. The opening also names the neighbour’s son and friends, but the relationship between them and the tenant could be stated more clearly. Overall, the purpose and requested outcome are clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: it introduces the complaint, describes how the problem developed, explains its effects, and then makes a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Initially,” “However,” and “That impact” guide the reader through the account. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. Some connections could be smoother and more precise: “with the time” does not clearly express the change in the noise, while “That impact” refers back somewhat awkwardly to the preceding sentence. Use clearer links such as “Over time, the noise has become worse” and “As a result, my work performance and mood have suffered.” This would make the progression feel more natural while preserving the effective overall organisation.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary to describe the complaint and its consequences, including “disturbance,” “yelling,” “performance,” and “address this matter.” These choices make the situation and your request understandable, and the tone is generally suitable for a formal letter. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “how much loud,” “a unnecessary noise,” “loud track of the games,” and “take a reasonable steps.” These errors make the language less precise and limit the range of natural phrasing. Aim to learn common combinations for complaints, such as “excessive noise,” “loud game audio,” and “take reasonable steps.” More accurate collocations would help you express the same ideas with greater fluency and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including a sentence explaining the connection between your work schedule and the noise. However, errors in verb forms, articles, agreement and sentence construction occur often enough to affect accuracy. For example, “the summer holidays have been started” should be “the summer holidays started,” and “a group of boys visits … and play” has inconsistent subject–verb agreement. In “I could not sleep on time because of…,” the tense and phrasing could be made more natural by using “I have been unable to fall asleep on time.” There are also article and plural errors in “a video games” and “a reasonable steps.” Review these patterns and proofread each sentence for agreement and article use.
