Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

My name is Kamaljeet Kaur, and I recently moved to flat no. 436 of your building. I am writing to express my concern regarding the loud noises from my neighbour apartment.

It was three days ago, while I was sleeping I heard loud voice and music from my neighbour flat and this disturbed me whole night I was unable to sleep. I noticed that the tenant of that flat plays video games with his friends until late night.

I work in IT company as a Data Analyst, and I have to stay active all day to focus to my work. However, this loud music of video games is disturbing me continuously. Due to which, my sleep is being compromised and making me unable to wake up on time. I feel distressed at work.

I would therefore like to request that you please contact the tenant and according to the rental agreement take appropriate action against him. Also, ensure that such incidents may not repeat in future.

I hope you will look into this matter seriously and take action promptly. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Kamaljeet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriately formal purpose. You identify the problem as beginning “three days ago,” explain its effects through disrupted sleep, difficulty waking, and feeling distressed at work, and request that the agency contact the tenant and take action under the rental agreement. These details make the complaint relevant and understandable. To strengthen the response further, develop the timeline slightly more precisely—for example, clarify whether the noise has occurred every night since it began—and make the requested remedy more specific, such as asking the agency to remind the tenant of quiet-hours rules. The ideas are extended and supported, although some details remain general.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information is arranged in a clear sequence: you introduce yourself and the complaint, describe when the noise started, explain its impact, and then state what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “I would therefore like to request” and “I look forward to hearing from you” help signal purpose and closure. The main weakness is that some links between ideas are less smooth. For instance, “Due to which” begins a sentence fragment, and the transition from the first night’s disturbance to the ongoing effect could be clearer. Use complete linking structures and make the chronology explicit to improve the flow while retaining the effective overall organisation.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “express my concern,” “distressed,” “appropriate action,” and “look into this matter seriously.” These choices communicate the issue and desired response clearly. However, some word combinations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “loud voice,” “neighbour apartment,” and “focus to my work.” “Loud music of video games” also does not describe the gaming noise as naturally as it could. Aim for more accurate collocations and vary repeated references to “loud” and “disturbing.” More precise language would make the letter sound more fluent and professional without changing its clear meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, such as “I am writing to express my concern…” and the conditional request beginning “I would therefore like to request…”. Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. In “It was three days ago, while I was sleeping I heard…,” the clauses need clearer punctuation and connection; “this disturbed me whole night” is missing an article; and “Due to which” is not a complete sentence. There are also issues with prepositions and sentence construction in “focus to my work” and “ensure that such incidents may not repeat.” Review clause boundaries, articles, and verb patterns, and proofread longer sentences for completeness.
