IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You rent a flat from an accommodation agency. Your neighbour who rents their flat from the same agency plays very loud video games late at night.
Write a letter to the accommodation agency. In your letter
explain when the problem began
describe how the noise affects you
say what you would like the agency to do
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are in high spirits. I am writing to inform you about an issue I am facing while living in my apartment. I am a resident of flat number 201. Eight months ago, I got this accommodation through your agency. However, I have not faced any problems while living in my flat until a week ago. There is a new person who just moved into flat 202. They play really loud music every night.
This problem began exactly a week ago. Around 8 pm, they start playing loud songs with heavy bass, and it continues until late at night. This has become a big issue now. Because I am a working professional. Every day, I have to start my day at 6 AM. Due to the loud sound, I am not only able to sleep every night, also lost focus on my work due to insufficient sleep. I have a dog; he gets scared because of the music.
I firmly request that you send a warning notice to the resident of that flat. I believe it was mentioned in the contract which all residents sign before moving into the accommodation that loud music is not allowed. Hopefully, after receiving notice from you, they will understand that they are disturbing their neighbours.
Hope this problem will be solved after they get a letter from the agency. Thank you for considering my request.
Yours sincerely,
Aksha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three points clearly: you identify when the issue began (“exactly a week ago”), explain its effects on your sleep, work and dog, and request that the agency send a warning notice. The details about starting work at 6 a.m. and the heavy bass make the complaint credible and relevant, while your request is clear throughout. To strengthen the response further, develop the proposed action slightly: for example, ask the agency to investigate or remind the neighbour of specific quiet-hour rules, and indicate what follow-up you would expect if the noise continues. The opening also says “Dear Sir,” rather than using the salutation specified in the task, though the letter remains appropriately formal overall.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: it introduces the complaint, gives its timing and effects, then makes a request and closes politely. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these stages, and links such as “However,” “Because,” and “Due to” show how the ideas relate. The sequence from the neighbour’s arrival to the impact on your daily routine is easy to follow. Some connections are less smooth, however: “Because I am a working professional” is left as a fragment, and “Hope this problem will be solved” repeats the expectation already expressed in the previous paragraph. Combining the related sleep and work details and ending with a concise follow-up request would make cohesion more flexible and less repetitive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to explain the complaint, including “heavy bass,” “insufficient sleep,” “warning notice,” and “disturbing their neighbours.” These choices communicate the situation and its effects clearly. There are also some less natural or imprecise expressions: “high spirits” is an unusually cheerful opening for a complaint, “loud songs” is less precise than describing loud gaming or game audio, and “got this accommodation” is not a natural collocation in this context. Replacing these with more conventional formal phrases would improve precision and tone. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient for the task, though greater control of collocation and register would make the letter sound more fluent and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and many sentences communicate their meaning clearly, such as “This problem began exactly a week ago” and “I believe it was mentioned in the contract…” Some grammatical errors remain. “Because I am a working professional” is an incomplete sentence, while “I am not only able to sleep every night, also lost focus” has faulty parallel structure and omits a needed negative construction. The sentence about the contract is also long and would be clearer if divided or punctuated more carefully. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit accuracy. Aim to connect dependent clauses to complete sentences and use parallel forms, for example, “I can neither sleep properly nor focus at work.”
