Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I'm writing to complain about playing loud video games late at night by my neighbour, which is effecting me badly.
They moved here on the 1st of October, and just after a week they started playing video games loudly. I asked them to reduce the voice but they did not listen to me.
I regularly go to the walk early in the morning, in the nearby countryside park. But since they making noices I cannot sleep properly and therefore I cannot wakeup on time and I mostly miss my morning walk as well. This is also effecting my performance at work due to lack of sleep.
There are some rules and regulations of the building and those are written on the notice board, and avoiding noice is also one of them. So if you can give them a warning based on those will be better.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Umer Nazeer

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: the noise began about a week after the neighbour moved in, it disrupts your sleep and morning routine and affects your work, and you ask the agency to issue a warning. The complaint remains focused, and the request is appropriate for a formal letter. The effects are supported with specific details, especially missing your early walk and reduced work performance. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the timing and frequency of the gaming—for example, how late it continues or how many nights a week—and specify what follow-up you expect if the warning does not resolve the problem. This would make the requested action more precise while retaining the clear purpose of the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, explain when it began, describe its effects, and then request action. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “therefore” and “since” show relationships between events and consequences. The opening and closing also suit a formal complaint. Some connections are less smooth, however: “But since they making noices” is grammatically unclear, and “those” in “those are written on the notice board” has a slightly vague reference. Use a complete clause and name the rules directly, then connect the warning request to the relevant rule. These refinements would make cohesion more flexible and less dependent on basic linking phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary communicates the main problem and its consequences, with useful phrases such as “reduce the voice,” “lack of sleep,” and “give them a warning.” However, several word choices, collocations, and spelling errors limit precision and naturalness. “Reduce the voice” would be more idiomatically expressed as “turn down the volume,” while “noices” is misspelled and “effecting me badly” uses the wrong form and sounds unnatural. “Go to the walk” is also unclear; “go for a walk” is the natural phrase. Build a more precise range for formal complaints, including terms such as “excessive noise,” “disturbance,” and “take appropriate action,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including the cause-and-effect sentence beginning “But since…” and the sentence explaining that poor sleep affects your work. The overall meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “since they making” needs an auxiliary (“since they have been making”), and “I cannot wakeup” should be “I cannot wake up.” In “which is effecting me badly,” the verb form is incorrect; a clearer construction is “which is affecting me badly.” The sentence about the building rules also has an awkward structure. Review auxiliary verbs, verb forms, and sentence construction, while continuing to use complex sentences to explain consequences.
