Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to complain about loud noises made by my neighbours' late at night game playing. This problem started three days ago, when I was ready to go to sleep at 10 PM, and I heard loud noises coming from next-door neighbour. Initially, I thought the problem would be temporary. However, the loud noises have become a daily routine now. I have talked to Mr Kapoor for playing without making noises. Nonetheless, he did not listen to my request and resolve the problem.
The noise has caused me to be less productive in the day. I fall asleep everywhere while working in office. Yesterday, I even got reprimanded by my boss for falling asleep during working hours. It was humiliating to be reprimanded in front of my colleagues.
I would like your agency to make some rules to make sure all the tenants can have a peaceful night. There should be rules like no noises after 10 PM. Kindly, talk to Mr Kapoor to wear headsets while playing games in the future.
Yours truly,
Khadija.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: the problem began three days ago, the noise affects your sleep and work, and you ask the agency to introduce quiet-hour rules and speak to Mr Kapoor about using a headset. The specific example of being reprimanded at work helps explain the impact, while your direct request gives the letter a clear purpose. The account is generally well supported, although the requested action could be developed further—for example, ask the agency to investigate or confirm what steps it will take if the noise continues. Overall, the relevant details and consistent purpose make this an effective response to the task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear progression: you explain the history of the noise, describe its consequences, and then state what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing supports this structure, and transitions such as “Initially,” “However,” and “Nonetheless” help show how events relate. The sequence is easy to follow, though some linking feels slightly mechanical, and the first paragraph contains several stages of the complaint in one block. The connection between the request for general rules and the specific request to speak to Mr Kapoor could also be made more explicit. More varied, natural transitions and a clearer separation of the background from your attempted conversation would strengthen the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the complaint and its effects, with useful expressions such as “less productive,” “reprimanded,” and “peaceful night.” However, several noticeable word-choice and collocation problems make parts of the letter sound unnatural: “neighbours’ late at night game playing,” “talked to Mr Kapoor for playing,” and “make some rules to make sure” are not idiomatic. “Loud noises” is also repeated, and “fall asleep everywhere” is an imprecise way to describe daytime tiredness. Aim for more natural complaint-letter phrases, such as “late-night gaming,” “asked Mr Kapoor to keep the noise down,” and “introduce quiet hours.” This would improve precision and reduce repetition.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a time clause in “when I was ready to go to sleep” and a contrast introduced by “However.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “coming from next-door neighbour” needs an article or possessive determiner, and “I have talked to Mr Kapoor for playing” has an incorrect grammatical pattern. The sentence “Kindly, talk to Mr Kapoor” also uses punctuation awkwardly, while “during working hours” would be more naturally formed as “during work hours.” Practise accurate article use and verb patterns, and check sentence punctuation; these improvements would make your varied sentence forms more controlled.
