Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this email to let you know about the problem, I'm facing in my appartment.

The neighbour living above me are very noisy, especially during evening and night, they play video games ludly throughout the night. Because of this reason it is becoming hard for me to study, relax or sleep in my house.

The problem started happening in Saturday, September 14th. The day after they came to apartment. There are several people come to their home often and they play DJ and enjoy throughout the night.

I have little child, she is getting disturb by this every often and I have no option left then complaning about them to you.

Could you please tell them if they can kindly slow down their noise specially during the night. Or else I have to leave this appartment.

Thank you for your attention and looking forward to hear from you soon.

Best regards,

Tom Thompson

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you identify when the disturbance began, explain that it makes it difficult to study, relax and sleep, and ask the agency to intervene. The mention of your young child adds a relevant reason for concern. The opening and closing also make the message recognisable as a formal complaint. Some details, however, are less fully developed: the start date is given, but “The day after they came to apartment” makes the timeline unclear, and the request to “slow down their noise” does not specify a practical action, such as reminding the tenants of quiet hours. The threat to leave the flat is clear but could be expressed more diplomatically. The response covers the task well, while clearer timing and a more precise request would strengthen it further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a generally coherent sequence: you introduce the complaint, describe the noise and its effects, give background, and make a request before closing. Paragraph breaks help separate these functions. However, the order of the timeline is confusing: “The problem started happening in Saturday, September 14th” is followed by “The day after they came to apartment,” so the reader cannot tell exactly when the noise began. Some links also feel mechanical or unclear, particularly “Because of this reason” and “Or else,” while the child’s disturbance is introduced without a smooth connection to the earlier effects. Use clearer transitions and keep related information together—for example, explain the move-in date and onset in one sentence, then connect the child’s sleep disruption to your request.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint, including “throughout the night,” “relax or sleep,” and “attention.” There are also attempts to describe the situation specifically, such as mentioning video games and your child. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “appartment,” “ludly,” “disturb,” and “complaning” are inaccurate, and “play DJ” does not clearly describe the neighbours’ activity. Some expressions are also unnatural for a formal letter, including “slow down their noise” and “I have no option left.” Choose more precise collocations such as “keep the noise down” and “I feel I have no choice but to report this.” More accurate spelling and formal phrasing would make the message clearer and more appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including “Because of this reason it is becoming hard for me to study, relax or sleep” and “I have little child, she is getting disturb by this.” The meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “The neighbour living above me are” has subject–verb disagreement, and “The day after they came to apartment” is an incomplete sentence with a missing article. The sentence joining the child’s situation to the complaint also needs clearer punctuation or a conjunction. There are some errors in verb forms and sentence construction, as in “she is getting disturb.” Practise complete sentences, agreement, articles and accurate verb forms while retaining your attempts at longer structures.
