Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to make a complain about my neighbour who plays very loud video games late at night.

This problem started from last 2 months, when my previous neighbour shifted to a different place to live. When new neighbour came to live they started playing video games at late night. Furthermore, they make lots of noise while playing video games which disturbs me a lot when I am trying to get some sleep.

This is very serious problem for me because I need to wake up at 6:00 AM for my job. I am not able to get enough sleep because of this noise. Moreover, I don't feel fresh when I woke up because I did not sleep well from last 2 months. I am not able to focus on my work because I did not gave enough rest to my eyes.

In the initial days, I have requested them politely to not make any noises at late night because I need to wake up early in the morning. They replied me that, we will make sure it won't happen again but things are not changing and they still make noise at late night. It would be great help for me if you send them a written notice which says that if you keep repeating this mistake then we might have to call 911. In addition to this you may have to leave the apartment.

I hope you understand my situation.

Thank you.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that the issue began after a new neighbour moved in, describe the effects on your sleep and work, and request that the agency issue a written warning. The details about waking at 6:00 a.m. and having already spoken politely to the neighbour help support your complaint. The requested action is also specific, although the reference to calling 911 and making the neighbour leave may sound overly forceful; asking the agency to investigate and enforce its noise policy would be more measured. Overall, the task is handled clearly and the main ideas are extended, though the proposed remedy could be framed more appropriately for a formal complaint.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression: it introduces the complaint, explains its history and impact, then describes your attempt to resolve it and asks the agency to act. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and connectors such as “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” and “In addition to this” help link points. However, several transitions feel mechanical, and the repeated references to noise and poor sleep make the middle paragraphs less efficient. Some links between ideas are also awkward—for example, the sentence about not giving your eyes enough rest does not connect as clearly to the effect on your work. To strengthen the organisation, group the consequences together, reduce repeated points, and use more natural links between the problem, its impact, and your requested action.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the complaint, and phrases such as “written notice,” “focus on my work,” and “make sure it won’t happen again” are relevant to the situation. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are noticeably inaccurate, which makes parts of the letter sound less natural. For example, “make a complain” should be “make a complaint,” while “shifted to a different place to live” and “make any noises” are awkward expressions. “I did not gave enough rest to my eyes” also uses an unsuitable phrase for describing tiredness. Aim to learn complete, natural phrases for formal complaints and vary repeated words such as “noise” and “problem.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “because” and “when,” and the reader can generally follow your meaning. However, errors in verb forms, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to limit accuracy. Examples include “This problem started from last 2 months,” “when my previous neighbour shifted,” and “I did not gave enough rest”; these need more accurate tense and verb patterns. There are also problems with reported speech and punctuation in “They replied me that, we will make sure…”. Practise past-tense forms and indirect speech, and check each sentence for a complete, correctly formed structure. More accurate control of these patterns would make the letter clearer and more professional.
