Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to complain about a very loud video game noise coming from my neighbour late at night. This issue is getting out of hands and will have serious effect on my daily routine.
It all started on the first weekend of this month. Usually, the other neighbours try to sleep early at the night, However, The new neighbour always plays video games with loud noise effects. As a result, it began effecting my sleep, which is necessary for having a successful workday. With irregular sleep, i could not focus on my tasks at work.
Initially, I tired solving the situation by communicating with them, and also requested to keep the voice on low.I request you to have a conversation with them and try to persuade them.
I appreciate your immediate attention to this matter.
Your sincerely
Anand

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three required points: you identify when the noise began (“the first weekend of this month”), explain its effect on your sleep and work, and ask the agency to speak with the neighbour. The impact is relevant, especially the link between irregular sleep and difficulty focusing. However, some points are less fully developed: the request that the agency “try to persuade them” is brief, and you could specify a practical outcome, such as asking the neighbour to lower the volume after a particular time. The response is also 7 words below the required minimum, so add a little detail about the disruption or the action you expect. Overall, the purpose is clear, but fuller development would make the request more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: complaint, background and effects, steps already taken, then a request and closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and links such as “As a result” make the cause-and-effect relationship easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectations and shows some effective progression. To make the organisation more flexible and polished, connect the attempted conversation more clearly to the agency’s role—for example, explain whether the neighbour responded or whether the noise continued. Some transitions and punctuation interrupt the flow, particularly “However, The new neighbour” and the abrupt shift from describing your work difficulties to your request. A more deliberate link between these ideas would strengthen cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for communicating the complaint, and phrases such as “daily routine,” “irregular sleep,” and “immediate attention” suit the formal purpose. You also use relevant topic language, including “noise effects” and “video games.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “getting out of hands,” “plays video games with loud noise effects,” and “keep the voice on low.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce naturalness and precision. Aim for more conventional expressions such as “getting out of hand,” “plays video games at a high volume,” and “turn the volume down.” More precise vocabulary for the requested action would also help make the letter sound appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a cause-and-effect structure in “As a result, it began effecting my sleep, which is necessary for having a successful workday.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the range is sufficient for this letter. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. For example, “will have serious effect” needs an article and plural form (“will have a serious effect”), while “i could not” requires a capital letter. The sentence beginning “Initially” also joins the attempted conversation and the request to the agency without a clear boundary. Review articles, capitalization, and sentence punctuation, and use consistent tense when describing the ongoing problem and its effects. These corrections would improve accuracy without changing your clear message.
