Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to draw your attention towards the noises being played by the neighbouring members of the residency, and at its full capacity during the weekdays at midnight. Since last couple of weeks when i try to sleep my little baby, I can hear continous streaming games being played among group of friends beside my flat at the right which is casusing a lot of troubles.
Bursting voices are interrupting us during the bedtime. I am a mother of 2 months old daughter as soon as she hears the noise, she starts screaming and gets scared and hardly sleeps, which is not a good routinue for her. Also, my husband works late night as he is in IT sector, which enhances his concentration.
I would suggest the organization to consider this situation highly sensitive and it creates negative impact on my family's helath and work. Residents must be given strict instructions to maintain silence around 11'o clock on weekdays whereas on other days they can keep quiet at 12. This positive change can maintain the discipline of the society.
Kind regards,
Kirandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points and maintain a clear, appropriately formal purpose: you explain that the noise has been occurring for the last couple of weeks, describe its effect on your baby and family, and request action from the agency. The specific example of your daughter waking and becoming frightened helps support the complaint. Your proposed quiet hours also give the agency a practical response to consider. To make the request more fully developed, state explicitly what you want the agency to do—for example, contact the neighbour or enforce the building’s noise rules. The suggested hours are clear in intent, but the distinction between weekdays and other days could be explained more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall structure: the opening introduces the complaint, the next paragraph explains its effects, and the final paragraph proposes a solution. This logical progression makes your purpose easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “Also” and “whereas” to connect related points. However, some connections are awkward or unclear, particularly the long opening sentence, where the timing, duration and source of the noise are crowded together. The sentence beginning “I am a mother…” also joins several ideas without clear punctuation. Separating these points into shorter sentences and using references such as “this disturbance” would make the cohesion smoother and less dependent on basic connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for explaining the complaint, and phrases such as “draw your attention” and “maintain the discipline” show an attempt to use more formal language. The reader can understand the main problem and its effects. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “noises being played,” “full capacity,” and “enhances his concentration,” which appears to mean that the noise affects your husband’s concentration. There are also spelling errors such as “continous,” “routinue” and “helath.” Choose more precise expressions for the noise and its impact, and proofread spelling carefully; this would make the letter sound more natural and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a sentence explaining the effect on your baby and a contrast introduced by “whereas.” The main message remains understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. For example, “Since last couple of weeks when i try to sleep my little baby” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “I am a mother of 2 months old daughter as soon as she hears the noise” needs an article and clearer sentence boundaries. The final request also shifts between “Residents must be given” and “they can,” making the intended rule less precise. Practise building complete clauses, using articles consistently, and punctuating longer sentences so that each idea is clearly separated.
