Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to complain about the individuals living in a flat next to my door. Passing last week, group of boys came to live in an apartment which is just next to me.Since, I was overwhelmed at that time to have neighbours of my same age group, but problem started when they started partying and making noises all over night.
As I am in my final year of my degree, due to that I have to study hard, but due to loud music and night parties, I am barely able to focus on my studies. Furthermore, my sleeping patterns are totally disturbed, indeed it is effecting my day to day work.
I have talked with them about the problems, but they did not took me seriously. I will request your valuable agency to talk on your behalf, or it can effect agency's reputation.
I will be waiting for your reply.
Kind regards,
Anmol dadwal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address the main parts of the task: you explain that the neighbours arrived last week, describe the effect on your studies and sleep, and ask the agency to intervene. The impact is relevant and clear in “barely able to focus on my studies” and “my sleeping patterns are totally disturbed.” However, the timing could be more precise: the task concerns loud video games late at night, while your letter describes partying and loud music, so the specific source of the noise is not clearly reported. Your request for the agency to speak to the neighbours is also somewhat vague. State explicitly that you want the agency to contact them and ensure the noise stops during late hours.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall structure: you introduce the complaint, explain its effects, make a request, and close politely. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking phrases such as “Furthermore” and “I have talked with them” support the progression. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some features of stronger cohesion. However, a few links are awkward or unclear, particularly “Since, I was overwhelmed at that time” and “I will request your valuable agency to talk on your behalf.” The repeated use of “due to” also makes the explanation feel mechanical. Use more direct transitions and make the relationship between each point explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “complain,” “loud music,” “focus on my studies,” and “sleeping patterns.” There are also attempts at more formal language, such as “valuable agency” and “agency’s reputation,” but these combinations are not natural in this context. Some word choices and forms reduce precision: “Passing last week” does not clearly express when the neighbours moved in, and “effecting my day to day work” uses the wrong form for the intended meaning. The range is adequate for the topic, but more accurate collocations would make the letter sound clearer and more professional. Prefer straightforward, natural expressions over formal-sounding phrases that do not fit.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, for example the sentence beginning “As I am in my final year” and the sentence explaining that you spoke to the neighbours. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. Examples include “group of boys came” (missing an article), “Since, I was” (incorrect punctuation and sentence connection), and “they did not took me seriously” (the verb after “did not” should be in its base form). The long sentence beginning “As I am…” also joins ideas awkwardly and repeats “due to.” Work on articles, verb forms after auxiliaries, and sentence boundaries, while keeping the useful mix of sentence types.
