Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter regarding the loud noise of video games coming from the next door during late night, which is affecting me to sleep and concentrate on studies.
This problem began just from two weeks, when someone moved to this apartment recently. Before that, this building is quiet and peaceful place to reside. I came back from work at night and was trying to sleep but unable to do so because of the sound of video games which is quite high.
I am a student at present at university and also working as a part time to cover my expenses. My exams are going to begin within in few weeks, so I have to study till late night and to sleep on time for the next day tasks. But, due to this disruption it is really hard for me to concentrate on both which is directly affecting my productivity at workplace and prepration for exams.
I would be grateful if any team member from agency contact the person who is living overthere and inform them about the distrubance faced by the neighbours. If this problem could be solved as quickly then it would be good for me otherwise, I have to find a new flat to rent out with no option left.
I hope to hear from you soon, Thanks for your time and consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Navpreet Dhillon.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You address all three requested points and maintain a clear, appropriate purpose throughout. The timing is specific (“just from two weeks”), the effects are explained through your sleep, studies, work productivity and exam preparation, and you make a clear request for the agency to contact the neighbour. The possibility of moving also communicates the seriousness of the issue. These details extend the main ideas and make the complaint persuasive. To strengthen the letter further, clarify the exact hours when the gaming occurs and specify a practical outcome, such as asking the neighbour to reduce the volume after a stated time. This would make the requested action more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, explain when it began, describe its impact, and then request action. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and links such as “Before that,” “so,” and “But” show relationships between ideas. The overall organisation is effective. Some connections are less smooth, however: the sentence beginning “I came back from work at night” shifts from the history of the problem to its effect without a clear transition, and “both” in the following paragraph requires the reader to infer that it refers to studying and sleeping. Use more explicit referencing and transitions, and keep each paragraph focused on one stage of the complaint, to make the progression more consistently clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for a formal complaint and communicates the main points, with useful phrases such as “loud noise,” “disruption,” “productivity,” and “consideration.” You also attempt more specific language about your circumstances, including “cover my expenses” and “preparation for exams.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, though: “affecting me to sleep,” “working as a part time,” and “contact the person who is living overthere” do not sound idiomatic. There are also spelling errors in “prepration” and “distrubance.” Aim to learn common word partnerships and check spelling carefully; more precise phrasing would make the letter sound more fluent and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a time clause (“when someone moved”) and a conditional request (“If this problem could be solved…”). The meaning remains clear overall, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “This problem began just from two weeks” has an incorrect time expression, while “Before that, this building is quiet” shifts tense inconsistently when describing the past. In “I have to study till late night and to sleep on time,” the parallel structure is not controlled, and “within in few weeks” contains an unnecessary preposition and a missing article. Review tense consistency, articles, and parallel verb forms, then proofread longer sentences to improve accuracy while retaining your range.
