Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain for my neighbour. They play extremely loud video games late at night and it causes disturbance to my sleep. This has become their routine since last 15 to 20 days.

My work schedule starts early in the morning around 6 A.M. Due to the noise, I am waking up from midnight to 3 A.M. This causes sleep apnea. Consequently, I am unable to focus on my work and it affects my mental and physical health as well.

I would like you to request them to reduce their noise. Alternatively, they may use headphone. This allows me to sleep without any disturbance and they may enjoy their games as well. Moreover, I can complete my work tasks efficiently after having proper sleep.

Thank you so much for your time and cooperation. I will be glad if they found this solution appropriate.

Your's faithfully,

Riya

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that the noise has been happening for “last 15 to 20 days,” describe its effect on sleep and work, and ask the agency to request quieter gaming or headphone use. The consequences are extended with details about your early start and difficulty concentrating, so the complaint is supported rather than merely stated. The request is also practical and considerate, since it offers a solution that could suit both parties. To strengthen the response further, make the agency’s role more explicit—for example, ask it to contact the neighbour or remind them of quiet hours. This would make the requested action especially clear and complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear progression: the opening states the complaint, the next paragraph explains its effects, and the final paragraph proposes a solution and closes politely. Linking expressions such as “Due to the noise,” “Consequently,” and “Moreover” help show relationships between ideas. Paragraphing is appropriate and the reader can follow the purpose throughout. Some connections are slightly repetitive or less precise: “Moreover” introduces another benefit of the same proposed solution, while “This allows me” has a reference that could be clearer. You could improve cohesion by linking the agency’s action directly to the outcome, and by making the final request and closing sentence flow together more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for a formal complaint and communicates the main points clearly, with useful phrases such as “extremely loud,” “disturbance to my sleep,” and “mental and physical health.” You also use some more formal language, including “Consequently” and “cooperation.” However, a few choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this context: “complain for my neighbour” does not clearly express that you are complaining about the neighbour, and “This causes sleep apnea” uses a medical term in a way that may not convey your intended meaning. “Reduce their noise” is understandable but less natural than asking them to lower the volume. Aim for precise, conventional collocations in formal letters while retaining your clear, task-focused vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect structures such as “Due to the noise…” and “Consequently, I am unable to focus…”. Most sentences communicate their meaning, and the paragraphing and sentence boundaries are generally controlled. Some grammatical errors remain. In “This has become their routine since last 15 to 20 days,” the time expression needs a different construction, such as “for the past 15 to 20 days.” “I will be glad if they found this solution appropriate” has an inconsistent conditional form; “if they find” would fit the intended meaning. The closing “Your’s faithfully” also has an apostrophe error. More consistent control of time expressions and conditional forms would improve accuracy.
