Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to inform you of a problem that is causing significant trouble to me and my family and we have been not able to sleep properly because of it.

The problem began when the new tenant arrived in our next door flat thrugh your accomodation agency. The first few days were normal and we had no complaint. But soon as the new neighbour started inviting his friends over for the night since last week, they have been playing video games consistently throiughout the night at full volume till the following morning.

The noise is too loud and can be clearly heard in both my master bedroom and living area as well. I have a day job and it requires for me to arrive at the construction site well before my labour shows up, sometimes even around 5 am. So I need a good night's sleep in order to function properly in the morning and be effecient at the workplace. The constant noise and laughter wakes me up multiple times and I have not been able to sleep peacefully since then.

I would like to suggest that, you contact the owner and tenant of the next door flat at your own end and just convey them the problem this behaviour is causing to the neighbours. They can just turn down the volume or use headphones so that the noise doesnt reach the adjacent flats.

I hope you would reach out soon and solve my concern.

Your Sincerely,

Musab Khan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter covers all three required points clearly. You explain that the issue began after a new tenant moved in and that the loud gaming started “since last week”; you also describe the effect on your sleep and early work schedule, and request that the agency contact the tenant and owner. The practical suggestion to lower the volume or use headphones makes the requested action specific. These details develop the complaint well and keep it focused on the agency’s role. To make the response even more complete, clarify whether you have already spoken to the neighbour and ask the agency to confirm what action it will take. The formal purpose is clear throughout, although the salutation and closing could be more consistently formal.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce the complaint, explain its onset, describe its impact, and then state what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing supports this progression, and links such as “But soon as” and “So” help show cause and effect. The reader can follow the situation without difficulty. Some connections are less smooth or precise, particularly “But soon as the new neighbour started…” and “I would like to suggest that, you contact…”. The final sentence also repeats the request to solve the problem without adding a next step. For stronger cohesion, use more natural transitions and make the relationship between the neighbour’s late-night gaming and your request explicit without relying on repeated references to “the problem” or “the noise.”

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “significant trouble,” “full volume,” “constant noise,” and “function properly.” These phrases communicate the seriousness and practical impact of the disturbance. There are, however, several spelling and word-choice errors, such as “thrugh,” “accomodation,” “throiughout,” and “effecient,” which reduce accuracy. Some expressions are also awkward or imprecise: “at your own end” and “convey them the problem” do not sound natural in this context. Aim for accurate spelling and conventional collocations in formal letters, for example, “contact the tenant directly” and “explain the impact on neighbouring residents.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses explaining cause and effect: “I have a day job and it requires for me to arrive…” and “The constant noise and laughter wakes me up multiple times.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “we have been not able to sleep” has an awkward auxiliary construction, “But soon as” is missing “as” after “soon,” and “it requires for me to arrive” uses an incorrect pattern. There are also agreement and punctuation issues in “noise and laughter wakes” and “I would like to suggest that, you contact…”. Review verb agreement, clause structure, and punctuation around introductory phrases to improve accuracy while retaining your sentence variety.
