Student answer (Band 6.0)
Respected sir or madam,
To commence with, from past few weeks i have been facing a problem of sound pollution at mid night. It is from our neighbour as they are playing video games at night with high volume. It is affecting our sleep as they are doing it at late night. it is not only affecting my sleep but also my work as i am not able to focus. This is becoming a serious issue for me as it is affecting to me at my work place and i have been warned about it many times.
Furthermore, i want you to take some serious actions like give some notice or fine them for breaching the code of conduct of your renting agency. It would be a great help to me if you could address this problem permanantly. I would suggest to make some strict rules and regulations with an aggrament while renting an appartment. Also, give a brief explanation of it to people so they would get to know the things which they should be aware of.
I will be waiting for your response,
you sinerly,
Mihir

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three required points: you say the noise began “from past few weeks,” explain that it disrupts your sleep and concentration at work, and ask the agency to issue a notice or fine the neighbour. The request is clear and relevant, and the letter maintains an appropriately serious purpose. Some ideas, however, are less fully developed than others. For example, the start of the problem is given only generally, and the effect on work is mentioned without explaining what happens during the day. The suggestion to introduce rules for future tenants is also less directly connected to resolving the current disturbance. A more specific timeline and a clear request for the agency to contact the neighbour or investigate would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: the first paragraph explains the problem and its effects, while the second sets out what you want the agency to do. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “Also” help signal the movement between points, and the closing is recognisable as a letter ending. Some cohesion is mechanical or unclear, however. “To commence with” is an unnecessarily formal opening for the complaint, and repeated references to “affecting” make the explanation feel less smoothly connected. The final suggestions about rules and an agreement shift from the immediate complaint to general policy. Grouping the requested actions together and using clearer links between cause, impact, and remedy would create more natural progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to the situation, including “high volume,” “serious issue,” “code of conduct,” and “strict rules and regulations.” These choices show an attempt to use formal language suitable for an agency. However, several word choices, collocations, and spellings are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “sound pollution” for noise disturbance, “take some serious actions,” “address this problem permanantly,” and “an aggrament.” “At mid night” is also not the natural expression for this context. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the complaint, but they limit precision and make the tone less fluent. Prefer common, accurate complaint-letter phrases and check spelling carefully, especially in key requests.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the clause “as they are playing video games at night” and the conditional request “if you could address this problem.” The main message remains understandable, but errors in sentence boundaries, capitalisation, and grammatical forms occur across the letter. For example, “it is not only affecting my sleep” begins with a lowercase letter after a full stop, and “affecting to me at my work place” uses an incorrect grammatical pattern. The sentence beginning “I would suggest to make” also needs a different construction, such as “I would suggest making.” There are some run-on or loosely joined ideas in the second paragraph. More accurate sentence boundaries and a wider range of controlled structures would improve clarity.
