Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to complain about the tenants living in a flat next to my door. Passing last week, group of boys came to live in an apartment which is just next to me. Since I was overwhelmed at that time to have neighbors of my same age group, but the problem started when they started partying and making noises all night.
Since I am graduating this year, I have to pay more attention towards my studies because I want to increase my academic score. However, due to commotion, and high volume music, I am barely able to focus on my studies. Furthermore, my sleeping patterns are totally disturbed, indeed it is affecting my day-to-day work.
I would highly appreciate if the agency could impose more stricter policies regarding situations like this. Lastly, a formal notice to my neighbors would be an effective resolution for this problem.
I look forward to your prompt response.
Kind regards,
Anmol Dadwal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you identify that the neighbours arrived last week, explain that noise disrupts your studying and sleep, and ask the agency to act through stricter policies and a formal notice. These details make the purpose clear and relevant. The complaint is not fully precise, however: the task concerns loud video games late at night, while you describe partying and high-volume music, so the specific source of the disturbance is changed. The request for stricter policies is also broad; explain what practical action you want, such as contacting the tenants and requiring them to keep gaming noise down after a stated hour. The clear coverage is strong, but some details need fuller and more accurate development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, describe its effects, request action, and close politely. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “However” and “Furthermore” help show how the noise affects you. The final request is also easy to identify. Some connections are less smooth: “Since I was overwhelmed at that time” does not clearly lead into the problem, and “Lastly” is unnecessary when introducing the second part of the request. The opening paragraph would be more coherent if it moved directly from the neighbours’ arrival to when the late-night noise began. Overall, the organisation is logical, with a few awkward transitions and linking choices to refine.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “commotion,” “academic score,” “sleeping patterns,” and “formal notice.” These choices communicate the impact and desired response, and the tone is generally appropriate. Some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “Passing last week” does not clearly mean that the neighbours moved in, “next to my door” is imprecise for a neighbouring flat, and “more stricter policies” is not a natural phrase. “Overwhelmed” also does not convey the intended positive feeling about having neighbours of a similar age. Aim for precise, conventional collocations such as “moved in last week,” “the flat next door,” and “stricter rules.” Your vocabulary is adequate, but these word-choice issues limit precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause in “because I want to increase my academic score” and the contrast introduced by “However.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the effects of the noise are expressed in complete sentences. Some grammatical errors remain: “Since I was overwhelmed at that time to have neighbors” is an incomplete and awkwardly constructed clause, while “I would highly appreciate if” needs “it” after “appreciate.” In “a group of boys came,” the article is missing, and “more stricter” incorrectly combines two comparative forms. Review clause construction, articles, and comparative forms, then proofread punctuation around sentence connectors. This would improve accuracy while preserving your range of structures.
