Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to you to complain about my neigbhour who plays loud video games late at night.

I have recently rented a flat (#12) from your accomodation agency. The neighbour next door (flat #13) plays very loud video games starting at night. Initially, I ignored it thinking that it might stop, however, it is a habit now.

Since, the loud noise is at night, it has become extremely frustrating for me as I work full-time during the day and prefer to rest at night. When I reach my flat, I want to relax with my cup of coffee and go to bed early to rest well but with this constant disturbance from the neighbours, it is not easy to follow my routine.

I would like to request you to intervene in this matter as I have personally tried to confront my neighbour, althought it did not make any difference. If the problem remains unattended, I would like to request for a replacement to a different flat.

I hope my problem could be solved.

Yours faithfully,

Shazia

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you identify the neighbour’s late-night gaming, explain that the noise disrupts your rest and routine, and ask the agency to intervene, with a possible move as a fallback. The complaint is clear and relevant. The timing is less fully explained, however: “Initially, I ignored it thinking that it might stop” suggests the problem has continued, but does not say when it began. The requested action could also be more specific, such as asking the agency to contact the neighbour and enforce quiet hours. These details would make the request more fully developed while retaining the clear purpose already present.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: purpose, description of the problem, its effect on you, and the action requested. Paragraphing supports this progression, and links such as “Initially,” “however,” and “Since” help connect ideas. Some connections are less smooth or precise: “Since, the loud noise is at night” is an awkward opening to the impact paragraph, and “it” in “I hope my problem could be solved” refers generally to the situation rather than a clearly named action. The repeated references to the neighbour and noise are understandable, but more varied, precise referencing and a smoother transition into the request would make cohesion more flexible and less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate to communicate the complaint, using relevant phrases such as “constant disturbance,” “intervene in this matter,” and “follow my routine.” There are also attempts at more formal language, including “accommodation agency” and “replacement.” However, several spelling errors—“neigbhour,” “accomodation,” and “althought”—are noticeable, and some choices are imprecise or unnatural: “plays … starting at night” and “request for a replacement to a different flat.” The repeated use of “request” and “problem” also limits variety. Aim for accurate spelling and natural collocations, for example, “plays late into the night” and “request a transfer to another flat.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and several sentences communicate the message clearly, such as “I have recently rented a flat … from your accommodation agency” and the sentence explaining that you work full-time. The contrast in “Initially, I ignored it … however, it is a habit now” also shows an attempt to link clauses. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain: “Since, the loud noise is at night” has incorrect punctuation and clause construction, while “I would like to request you to intervene” uses an awkward verb pattern. The final sentence, “I hope my problem could be solved,” also has an unsuitable modal construction for this hope. More accurate clause linking and verb patterns would improve control.
