Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Sir

I am writing this letter to apprise you about the problem I am facing because of my neighbour. He plays very loud video games till late night. This problem began few months ago. The loud noise affects my ears while sleeping at night. I am not able to sleep peacefully the noise irritates me a lot due to the loud volume. I am suffering from ear pain and headache. I want you to take a strict action for this problem. I have discussed this matter with other members of the flat as well. Hoping for your immidiate action on this problem.

Yours faithfully

Mithun

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the central issue, explain that it began “few months ago,” describe sleep disruption and physical effects, and ask the agency to act. However, the task is only partially addressed: the start time and frequency of the gaming are not specified, and the request for “a strict action” does not explain what you want the agency to do, such as contact the neighbour or enforce quiet hours. The effects are also listed briefly rather than developed. The response is 106 words, below the required 150, so there is limited space to explain these points. Add specific details and a clear, practical request to make the letter more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The letter follows a basic order: it introduces the problem, describes its effects, and ends with a request. This gives the reader a general understanding of your purpose. However, the ideas are compressed into one paragraph, so the letter has little overall progression, and several points run together: “I am not able to sleep peacefully the noise irritates me a lot.” Use separate paragraphs for the problem, its impact, and your requested action. Linking phrases such as “Since then,” “As a result,” and “I would therefore ask you to…” would make the relationships between ideas clearer. The closing is present, but the final sentence feels abrupt rather than forming a polished conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary to communicate the complaint, including “loud video games,” “sleep peacefully,” “irritates,” and “ear pain and headache.” “Apprise” shows an attempt to use a more formal word, although “inform” would sound more natural in this context. The range is limited, however, and “problem” and “loud” are repeated without more precise alternatives. There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice issues, including “immidiate” and the unnatural phrase “take a strict action.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the complaint, but they reduce accuracy and naturalness. Build a small range of formal complaint phrases and use them precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

Most of your sentences use simple structures, such as “He plays very loud video games” and “I am suffering from ear pain and headache,” so the main message is understandable. However, the range is limited and errors occur frequently. In “This problem began few months ago,” the article “a” is needed before “few months”; “till late night” also needs a more accurate time expression. The sentence beginning “I am not able to sleep peacefully” joins two complete ideas without suitable punctuation or a linking word. The closing fragment, “Hoping for your immidiate action,” would be more complete as a full sentence. Practise accurate sentence boundaries and vary simple sentences with controlled clauses.
