Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing to complain about the next door people who create an excessive noise. That accommodation is also rented from your agency.

The problem has occured last 3 weeks when my neighbour started to play video games late at night. Intially, this voice has occured occassionally; however, now , it has become a quite common, from 9pm to 2pm.

This high volume voice affects me alot in the different ways. More importantly, It creates disturbance for my study. as I am a student , so I encounter the problem of less concentrate on my academic. In the following month, I have final examinations so I am unable to concentrate on study. Also, I can not get proper sleep due to high beat of games. Moreover, enjoying a serene environment is more challenging nowadays and feel more stressed.

I would greatfully appreciate it if you could ask the neighbour and strict them to make peaceful environment. If you do not solve this matter, I have to case fiel against the tenant agreement.

I look forward for hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Ricky

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you say the noise began “last 3 weeks,” explain that it disrupts studying and sleep, and ask the agency to intervene. The purpose and complaint are clear, and the letter uses an appropriate formal opening and closing. Some details are less fully developed, however: the start date is imprecise, and the request to “ask the neighbour” and “strict them” does not clearly specify the action you expect, such as reminding the tenant of quiet hours or investigating the complaint. The proposed legal action is also unclear. To strengthen the response, give a precise timeframe and make a practical, clearly worded request while maintaining a consistent, polite tone.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a recognisable progression from introducing the complaint, to describing its effects, and then requesting action. Paragraphing helps separate these functions, and linking expressions such as “however,” “More importantly,” and “Moreover” show an effort to connect ideas. Some connections are mechanical or unclear, though: “This high volume voice affects me alot in the different ways” is followed by several effects without a clear structure, while “In the following month” does not connect smoothly to the examination point. Punctuation and spacing also interrupt the flow in places. Group the effects into a more controlled sequence and use transitions that express the exact relationship between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for a complaint, including “excessive noise,” “disturbance,” “concentrate,” and “serene environment.” These choices show some range beyond basic wording, but several inaccurate or unnatural expressions make parts of the letter less clear. For example, “high volume voice” and “high beat of games” do not describe the noise naturally, while “strict them” and “case fiel” obscure your intended request and consequence. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “occured,” “Intially,” “occassionally,” and “greatfully.” Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling carefully; precise everyday language is more effective here than ambitious but unclear phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast introduced by “however” and the conditional request, “I would greatfully appreciate it if…”. The main message remains understandable, but errors in verb forms, sentence construction, articles, and punctuation are evident. For example, “The problem has occured last 3 weeks” uses an unsuitable tense and lacks a clear time expression, while “it has become a quite common” has an incorrect article and structure. The sentence beginning “as I am a student” is not properly joined to the preceding clause, and “I look forward for hearing” has an incorrect grammatical pattern. Review past-time expressions, clause boundaries, and common formal-letter structures, then proofread each sentence.
