Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to inform you about a loud noise coming from my neighnours, which disturb my family in night. my unit number is 311 and noise coming from is unit number 312.

Its been one week now. They bought new game which they play on TV. They put the volume high. I requested them to lower your volume because it disturb us. At first they minimize it but later on they said we can not enjoy in low music. particularly they make it loud from 9pm to 12pm.

My kids can not sleep due to that noise. They feel it scary and starts crying. I am out of my sleeping routine, mostly I wait when they will finish the game and then I will sleep.

As you are the one who rented both of these apartments. I would request you to give them a notice to keep the volume low which keep only in their room, or arrange another apartment on different floor. I hope you will consider my request and take prompt.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Your faithfully,

Ahmed Ammar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: the problem began about a week ago, the noise affects your children’s sleep and your own routine, and you ask the agency to intervene or consider moving the neighbour. The details about the neighbour’s response and the hours of gaming help explain why you are contacting the agency, and your request gives the letter a clear purpose. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the timing: “9pm to 12pm” could mean noon, so specify midnight. You could also state more directly that the noise is occurring late at night and ask for a particular action, such as contacting the neighbour and confirming what steps will be taken.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible progression from identifying the noise, to describing its effects, and then making a request. Separate paragraphs help the reader locate each part of your message, and phrases such as “At first” and “As you are the one” signal relationships between ideas. The overall arrangement is coherent, but some links and references are not fully clear. For example, “which disturb my family in night” does not connect smoothly to the opening, and “which keep only in their room” is difficult to interpret. Use clearer transitions and refer explicitly to the noise or the neighbour. A more formal closing paragraph could also make the request and expected follow-up easier to identify.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main problem and its effects, using relevant terms such as “volume,” “sleeping routine,” and “notice.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural, which sometimes makes the message less clear. For instance, “loud noise coming from my neighbours” is less precise than describing loud gaming noise, while “take prompt” does not express the intended action clearly. There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “neighnours” and “scary.” Aim for accurate, natural phrases suited to a formal complaint, and vary repeated words such as “noise” and “loud” with precise alternatives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You communicate the main events using a mixture of short statements and some longer sentences, including “I requested them to lower your volume because it disturb us.” However, control of sentence structure and basic grammar is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include missing or incorrect verb forms in “which disturb my family” and “They feel it scary and starts crying,” as well as tense and agreement problems in “Its been one week now.” Sentence boundaries and capitalization also need attention, particularly the lowercase “my” after a full stop and the fragment beginning “As you are the one.” Practise accurate present and past forms, subject–verb agreement, and complete sentences before adding more complex structures.
