Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Sir or Madam.
I am writing this letter to inform you about very loud noise video games late at night from next flat.
From last two weeks, we are experiencing a loud noise from flat next door to my house. I recently found out that the noisy flat is also rented through your agency. Actually, at the midnight, a very noisy loud sound comes from the flat we are very disturbed by the sound. Espescially, in the night we are not able to sleep and continue our daily routines.
I would really appreciate if you could help us to solve the problem. Moreover, Please take some strict actions againt the flat owner and inform them this kind of behaviour is not acceptable in our peaceful society.
Thank you so much for your help.
Yours sincerely,
Lovepreet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address the main purpose and include all three requested points: the noise has been happening “from last two weeks,” it prevents you from sleeping and following your routine, and you ask the agency to take action. However, the explanation of when it began is brief, and the effects are not fully developed—for example, you could explain how tiredness affects your work or daily life. Your request for “strict actions” is also quite general; specify a practical step, such as contacting the neighbour and asking them to keep the volume down after a particular time. The response is 13 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to develop these details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a recognisable structure: you introduce the complaint, give details, make a request, and close politely. This makes the overall message easy to follow. The sequence from the problem to its effect and then to your request is generally logical. However, the second paragraph contains several ideas in one long, awkwardly connected sentence: “at the midnight, a very noisy loud sound comes … we are very disturbed.” This weakens the flow and makes the relationship between points less clear. “Moreover” does not introduce a distinct additional request, and capitalising “Please” after the comma is distracting. Use shorter sentences and clearer links to make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the complaint, using relevant terms such as “late at night,” “rented through your agency,” and “not able to sleep.” However, the range is limited and some expressions are repetitive or imprecise: “very loud noise,” “loud noise,” and “very noisy loud sound” repeat the same idea, while “strict actions” is not a natural phrase in this context. There are also spelling errors, including “Espescially” and “againt,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise language such as “excessive noise,” “disturbance,” and “take appropriate action.” This would make the letter sound clearer and more formal without changing its meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You use mostly simple sentence patterns, with an attempt at a more complex request in “I would really appreciate if you could help us to solve the problem.” However, several grammatical errors make parts of the letter awkward or unclear. “From last two weeks” needs a more accurate time construction, and “at the midnight” uses an unnecessary article. The sentence beginning “Actually, at the midnight” joins clauses without suitable punctuation or a clear grammatical link. There is also a missing “it” in “I would really appreciate if.” Use a wider mix of correctly formed sentences, and check articles, verb patterns, and sentence boundaries to improve control.
