Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir,

I would like to send my letter of complain to my neighbor in Flat 02 as of last night's unacceptable bahavior like playing loud music in the middle of the night and they are disturbing my sleep and peace of mind. And I have also other concern about the garbage disposal as they are throwing baby's diapers in the hallway which is really disgusting and inbelievable.Actually I have already confronted them and told them my concern but it nothing has changed.

I would suggest that your agency should coordinate with the building management on impossing cerfew for tenants.Loud music should be limited to 9pm not more than 10pm in the night. At same time the management should impose penalties to those tenants that are not disposing their garabage properly.

We are paying the proper rent every month for comfort and peace.Hopefully you will give the service and request that we are asking for.

Thank you

Ms. Jiji

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You communicate a complaint and make a clear request for the agency to act, including a proposed quiet-hours limit and penalties for improper rubbish disposal. However, the response does not fully address the specific task: it never explains when the late-night gaming problem began, and it refers to loud music rather than video games. The additional complaint about nappies in the hallway takes attention away from the main issue, while the effects are only briefly described as disturbing your sleep and peace of mind. To strengthen the letter, state when the gaming started, explain its practical impact, and focus your requested action on addressing that neighbour’s late-night noise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter has a recognisable sequence: it introduces the complaint, proposes action, and closes with an appeal to the agency. This gives the reader a basic sense of purpose. However, the first paragraph combines several concerns—noise, sleep, rubbish, and a previous confrontation—so the main issue is not developed in a clear progression. The transition to the agency’s proposed response is also abrupt, and phrases such as “At same time” do not clearly connect the two requests. Use separate paragraphs for the noise problem and the requested action, and make the links between ideas explicit. A conventional opening and a more focused closing would also make the letter easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to a complaint, including “disturbing my sleep,” “garbage disposal,” “confronted,” and “impose penalties.” These choices help convey dissatisfaction and suggest possible remedies. However, several spelling errors and awkward or imprecise expressions reduce clarity, such as “bahavior,” “inbelievable,” “impossing,” and “garabage.” “Letter of complain” and “coordinate with the building management on imposing curfew” are also unnatural collocations. In addition, “loud music” does not accurately describe the video-game noise in the task. Check spelling carefully and choose precise, natural phrases for the problem and requested action; this will make the complaint sound more credible and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts to combine ideas using clauses, for example in “as they are throwing baby's diapers in the hallway,” and it uses modal forms such as “should coordinate” and “should be limited.” However, the sentence structures are often difficult to control. The opening is a fragment beginning “I would like to send my letter… as of last night's…,” and “but it nothing has changed” is missing a verb. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, as in “At same time” and the run-on joining “peace of mind.And.” Use shorter, complete sentences first, then add complex clauses only when their grammar is secure. Careful punctuation and proofreading would improve readability.
